Default Horn colors?

What makes some bucks have bright white horns and other a dark brown? Most of my sheds are bone white. But when you see a buck the horns are a dark brown or tan color. Any ideas what makes them the color they are?

I always thought it was something in their diet. I know when they rub a Cedar or Pine they tend to get dark around the base and are still lite up the beam and to the tips. But that dosen't explain the solid dark racks Bucks.

I always wanted to get me a Dark brown rack Buck. I missed my chance years ago up in NY, But i did find his sheds from the year before, Both sides. But the mice got to them, well atleast what was sticking out of the snow.

The tannin and the bark of the trees determine the color variation of the antlers. Some deer like rubbing pines and cedars, some like rubbing hardwoods, and some like both. What they rub will determine the color of their antlers. All antlers start off white (bone color) and then go from there.

The color is determined by which point they rub the velvet off of there antlers. If they rub before the velvet dies off, there will be more "live" blood vessels in the tissue. If they rub after the velvet starts die off then the antlers with be more lighter in color. Also the types of trees being rubbed contribute to the color as well.

You are correct also. There is not one or two factors that determine a bucks antler color but several.
