In the past the hunters was looking for the deeper raspy sounding mouth calls. In the last 2 season guys was telling me that the higher pitched calls was what the birds wanted to hear and answer too. and last season a lot of guys was using 2 and 3 reed yelpers.
so what do you guys want this coming season and why?

Ron I find it differs spot to spot, day to day, week to week. I've had times were they would only respond to the worse sounding highest pitch squeals and other times deep Trace Adkins sounding.
One time my cousin and I tried everything to get birds going...nothing.. I pulled out this old stuck together call and tried. WOW made your ears bleed..was worse sounding call I ever heard...kinda sounded like a hen eing raped by a horse but it fired up a good bird:huh::nuts:
I take a lot of calls with me, lots of mouth, a box and Pete's buck barn friction cause you can easily adjust the pitch and tone.
Majority of my mouth calls are 2 & 3 reeds.
7 years ago had great success with gobbler tube on boss toms who hung up but since that year very little success with it.
That's what I love about turkey hunting..as soon as you get it all figured out they go and change the rules:)

I carry a variety of mouth calls with me. Like said, each gobbler responds differently. I do favor the raspy 3 or 4 reeds overall though.

Let me rephrase, I am curious if hunters are looking for a certain sound this coming year or are they going to go with what ever. for example I will carry 18 to 24 mouth calls with me. and every year i will use them all at least once but this yea I am looking to use higher pitched calls in the 2 and 3 reed yelpers to start the birds a 2 reed cuts to work and finish, I will of course have my deep sounds as That is what I like LOL the reason is with the last 2 seasons My birds have not been talkin. Last season I would watch 5 to 7 toms not jakes with 10 plus hens in late May full strut. they had no reason to open. My go to deeper sounds of many years would just get them looking maybe walk a few yards then go right back to what they had. the high pitched sounds would get some talk at least. this saved my butt with locating with the biggest bird last year. I believe that the higher pitched sounds will give a shock at least to loc a bird. the higher pitched cut calls worked last season better than the go to lower rasps so I will be using more of them this season I believe and may be wrong but higher pitched will reach out farther. also a excited bird will raise up in pitch. also a lost bird from the flock will raise up in pitch also a mad hen will start low but end high. so this season i will be going higher with my pots like glass over alum and my short high pitched boxes.
looking for other mindsets.

i like pots, but same thing.
i use a glass over aluminum to get their attention if they are out there. they will answer that at long distance better then a warmer call.
i will then pull and finish with a glass over wood. a lot warmer tone. not much lower in frequency or note, but warmer, not as crisp.
i can't use a diaphragm without gagging. i think i need a kids frame. i tend to put the call too far back. i have a narrow pallet.

What the birds will like??? I will not know untill I'm out there. My personally style of calling is higher pitched, fast, and excited. Of course though when I'm working a gobbler I tone down and become much more selected in my vocalizations. Just my personal taste. It doesn't kill birds every outting though, but usually one or two a year. I have though killed birds with deep raspy calling. Is it just me or do you see a lot of southern turkey hunters favoring the deep raspy calls more. Maybe it's just me and how I hear it on TV. I have sometimes found deep raspy calling to be somewhat restricted. Maybe it's the brand calls I've used, but purrs being more difficult to make work on mouth calls. I had a bird before that just wanted deeper calls. I kept several mouth calls in my cheaks. Would have to switch them out depending on what call to make.
Tom-
Funny you mention about a gobbler tube. I've had great success with them. Not only as a locator (bad side is it is a hunter locator also), but as an intimidation call also. I've had 2-4 bird bachelor groups come into shooting range when 15 mins before they wouldn't give me a peep. I'll use the tube, different sets of hen calls and gobble with my mouth call. I try to sound like another flock with provocative hens. Been really effective for me. Especially when you try to gobble over top of their gobble. Really gets them awake then:thup:

so far, for most guys, they will enter the season with out a plan on what they are going to do. That comes out wrong:) but I don't know how to say it different LOL
I guess with my back ground of 32 years wildlife control has forced me to see and change if I need to, before I need to. for me the past 2 seasons has not been what I am use to meaning go locate 3 to 5 birds in a morning and have them work me talking all the way in. so I will change. I will be the first to tell ya the calls have to be what they want that is a no brain-er for a seasoned caller. but what they want in my area is not what they have wanted for the past 15 before. I always get 3 or 4 birds and my son the same, and I always call for at least 5 people, last season was a humbling, God has away to do that to me LOL but last season I only got one really good one, and my son was the same, now we did pass on Jake's, the past few years the birds have not talked as much and the hen numbers again in my area is very high which means the toms are not leaving a hot hen and they are flocked till and into June. So I am making plans now see what is going on and then making the adjustments before the season comes. I am sure there is a lot of folks out there reading this that could get so good know how if we get away from the basic and get down deep on what and why. not advertising calls, just the whys.

Ron every year I do try to have some new sound to throw at them, I like to sound a little different.. I try to be that different exotic girl at the bar
give them a resaon to come in and investigate.
I do generally use the higher pitch calls, I run and gun, if they don't want to talk and play nice I move on...even if I can see they in the field..I give them usually 15 minutes to take their temperature. I sit for deer, for turkey I want the action and the talking. Last year was a good year for me, I harvested 3 good birds and called in 4 birds for other guys to take.
As of right now I don't have a plan as far as a specific sound, just buy some more mouth calls and respond to each bird as they tell me to.
I do want to try a tube/snuffer call this year.
Good luck all!
