I am looking at guns for my girlfriend. She wants to get into hunting and we are pondering on what gun would be good for her. We are gonna go out and fit some guns to her in the next week or two. I think we are gonna start her on 20ga. Any suggestions?

What is she gonna be primarily targeting? For duck i would say a 20ga will do just fine. for goose i would move up to a 16ga and for deer i would say 16ga would do the job but your better of with a 12ga. look into some youth models as they are shorter and lighter and would probly fit her a little better. And put a pad on that stock:D

Most likely target, upland and ducks....she doesnt really like sittin still much, too boring, so deer hunting prolly wont fly....

Two guns that come to mind are the remington 11-87 20ga with a youth stock and for arm. Or for the extra cash the benelli 20ga ultra light is a sweet gun.

I like both those guns too... Its gonna be up to her in the end, I cant really think of to many other guns that would be good for her as a first gun, eventually I would imagine she would move up to a 12, but I dont know for sure.

Take a look on harry's used gun list. For a first gun you might be better of trying to find something used. They got some good deals. It might be a little of a hike for you, but i guess it would be a nice day trip for you and your girl. and the sportsman center is right down the street. check it out this weekend. The offshore forcast sucks, were never gona get those yft. hopefully something happens after this storm. Were gonna try to do a overnighter next week. I'll let-cha know.

Thanks for the site, never knew they had one...I live 20-25 minutes up the road from there...I was actually at harry's looking at a remington tri-cote marine 12ga with a 18" barrel for the boat before the last trip we made, I was picking some leader and swivels for the trip out..

i got a youth model 1100lt 20ga my sister shoots all the time and handles it fine. i used it hunting till i was 13 and killed plenty of deer and small game with it. and i still take it out for early season teal and woodies and do fine. i would suggest makin sure it 3inch cause 2 3/4 is hard to find in steel shot.

Yeah, whatever I get her will be 3"....I am favoring the 20 over the 16, just for the fact its much easier to buy shells in a pinch

Look for an auto vs a manual action as the recoil in a light gun will be dramaticaly reduced. The Bennelis are the benchmark for quality.

Recoil is not a big problem with the newer guns. Get her a quality 12 auto and she will never have to think about another gun. My wife goes shooting with me and never has a problem with my 12's.

The 20s are nice and usually adequate. However, ammo is less common and usually costs more. She could easily get used to the recoil of 12ga dove loads. They barely kick at all. Then there's the option to move up to high brass for larger critters. The 12ga will also be more forgiving with a larger shot pattern.

I love my 1187 for deer, but for everything else, I use my Franchi AL48 black magic 20 gauge
The 3" model is hard to find but the gun is SUPER light and reliable

I am a small guy and this gun fits perfect.
