Heres the story. Been hunting this piece in L.A.C for a few years, every year i see nice bucks and 2 years ago took a nice 10 that scored 132, 126 6/8 with deductions. Anyhow this year have been seeing alot of spikes and small bucks. Allthough last week i saw a nice 10 that i almost had a shot at before he spooked:(. So monday night waited where we park to see how the other guys made out and if they where seeing anything. Same thing small bucks, does, no shooters. I said to the one guy ya know weve been hunting in deep, on the edges, and seeing nothing good. I said tomorrow i'm going take my climber and go right in here, pointing to the piece right in front of my truck. I knew it did'nt get any pressure because we were hunting back in. This area also had nice bedding areas with lots of laurel. So tues i get there about 3.30 grab my stand and head in right in front of my truck. I come to this open area and slowly mill around looking for sign. Finally i find this group of trees that where just shreaded and fresh. So i set up along this creek where i can see both sides of creek. I grunt few times, bleat can a few times. About a half hour after getting in stand i see this buck come down along the creek on the other side. He crosses the creek onto my side out about 40yds. I pick up my bow and give a light grunt by mouth (i don't use a call). Now he's looking in my direction, and i'm hiding behind my bow. Oh yea what i forgot to say was he's a monster:eek:. So he starts to walk my way. Now about thirty yards out theres a big pine tree that he's going to walk behind, thats where i decide to draw, because if he gets past there its all small trees and he'll probally catch me. He walks out behind the tree,me at fulldraw, he's heading for some bushes so i mouth grunt again and he stops between 25,30 yards. So i go through the checklist, kisser, nose on string, peep, smooth release, "aim small, miss small". I let fly, feels good, looks good, buck runs up path away from me like nothing happend, stands there for couple seconds then trots off to my left out of sight. Now i'm wondering did i hit him? I think i did. So i make a few phone calls then get down quiety after about 20 minutes, wrap up my stand and slowly walk over to my arrow. Good blood:thup:. So i back out go to truck drop some gear, kill some time, then go back in. Now its raining and i'm worried about the bloodtrail. I get to the spot where my arrow is pull it out look back at the tree i was in and thought, damn, long shot. So i head to the spot where i seen him stop for a few seconds. Got blood:thup:. I turn in the direction he headed, walked about 10 yards got down and looked under the trees into the laurels, is that him laying there? Yup thats him. "Thank you God". heavy racked main frame 9 with kicker on brow and g2 on right. 10" G2s 6" brows 170#. Will score 140s high 130s.So thats the story of "BA RACK" the election day buck. I have pics but don't know how to post so if someone sends me there e-mail i'll forward to them. Hope you enjoyed, I DID:D.Will JUST GOT SCORE BACK GO TO LAST PAGE TO GUESS

Great deer, great story. I have used the trick of staying close instead of walking deep as most hunters do and it has worked for me, not quite the same results though.

OH MY GOD Will!!! The worst part is I think I'm the one you were talking to about trying that piece the night before:(:D I always hunt way too deep there and you and the other Will are always on me about it:rolleyes:
That's a truely awesome buck and you put the time in....well deserved, nice job.
Now I know why you were'nt there on Friday, I hunted all day and saw only one button buck. No grunting or running does, nothing at all....looked like early season.
On a side note, remember a few weeks back, the Arkansas guy that I helped track a doe (second one he shot that week)? Well, I think he is just sticking them for fun...found her rotting about 30 yards past where we marked last blood when his flashlight died and I told him not to push her....he never came back, she was laying right in the outside trail by the willow oak (Don's stand.) I wonder if that had anything to do with the lack of activity in that area?
What trophy on public land....You are the MAN!!!

Hey Will
I saw a nice shooter but he stepped out of my shooting lane about a second to fast on Friday. He was running a doe. It all worked out as planned but he didn't stay quite long enough for me to get a pin on him. I'm done with the start of small game. The chicken hunters have returned. I'm kicking myself a little for letting the 8's and that 10 walk. Hopefully they're a little bigger next year. I'm going down this weekend to pull my stands. I have to get my shoulder surgery next week. 5 months of rehab should be fun. I'm think I'm done til next year. I get out of the sling after Christmas. I'll have to see if I'm healed enough for muzzleloader and shotgun permit in January. I'll just shoot lefty and won't tell the doctor. I just bought a S&W 460 XVR. Big ol' bullets should leave a big ol' hole. I'm going to book a Spring bear hunt in Maine since I didn't get what I was looking for locally this year. If you have any interest let me know. I'm researching outfitters now.

Don , Good luck on the surgery and the rest of the hunting year. I was down yesterday, sat on that first block of hardwoods coming in,saw nuthin. Stopped to talk to the guy that hunts the private piece as i saw him at his truck. When i first pulled up he was'nt to happy, he had heard about the deer and you know how a story gets screwed up i think he thought i took it off of the edge of thier property. After talking to him for awhile he mellowed out. Someone told his buddy that he helped me drag it out of the frags, which are everywhere, but do surround thier property. I drug it out myself the only time someone helped was to drag out of treeline in front of truck and lift into truck. Then he was asking about some stands in woods that they can see from thier property. These guys act like all the deer around are thiers. He also asked if i have seen the bear. he has'nt but knows someone that has. As far as you letting the 8 & 10 walk is a credit to you. you know as well as i what the potential is out of there. And like ya said they'll be bigger and better next year.
Good luck again See ya next year:wave: Will

Hey Don, good to see you on this board! Hope Canada was good. I sat near the willow oak stand with my climber while you were away, had that 8 come in late one night. I also thought he was a spike in the low light, till I saw the little points/nubs when he was right under me...he got the pass by me also:D Good luck with the surgery, hope all is well.
Will, I am done also now that the bird hunters are there, pulled my stands friday. I did a bit of looking around near some bedding areas that I don't dare step in during the season and it did not look good. No where near the sign back there that I usually see....no rubs, nothing...never seen it like that before. Other than what you shot and saw....it looked bad back where I was. 3 or 4 years ago, I had trouble counting different shooter buck sightings on 2 hands, this year just one and a real drop off in sign. Hopefully it was just an off year for me:confused:
I'll be in zone 25 from here on out, stands are up, sign looks fantastic, at least 3 8's and a monster in our piece....can't wait till Dec 1st

Hey brad, Yea i thought this year was a little different than previous years, seen alot of small bucks, more than usuall. I don't know if the work they did on the fields back there had something to do with it, or maybe they didn't care for what they planted? I was talking to the guy on the private piece and he said he can't wait untill they cut the fields. He told me what it was, but i forget, but he said the deer don't eat it. Who knows it could be that simple, better forage elsewhere. Any how good luck rest of season, be sure to post any harvest. I'll see ya next year. Oh yea, sunday after i got the buck i went fishing with mickey on the HOGWILD.We got 6 keepers:D and a ton of doggies:mad: All in all a pretty good week, don't ya think? Yesterday i finished first batch of jerky, second batch is on now, with more in freezer.:yahooo: Will

I'll guess well into 130s Vonhess. I cant get a good read on his main beam length though. His circumferences are great. Not having a g4 on his left beam will hurt overall score, but an absolute great deer.
I would say 22 to 23 inches on beams, mass is tough for me to judge. I'll go with 139 gross.
