I have hunted over Setters since I could walk with my dad. (I'm in my fifties today). We used to hunt pheasant and quail on all the WMA's in NJ with our dogs and we've also hunted native birds (quail and pheasant) in Maryland and Virginia on private farmland. My dad was religious in making his annual pilgrammage to Maine for grouse and woodcock migration each year for a week or two. I've had my dog to Maine as well. He always preferred Setters for their close-working abilities and he also preferred birds that would sit tight for the dog. I would say that makes me partial to Setters but they are all I know. That's the reason I chose a Setter for myself. I have hunted over other dogs owned by my friends and I would never say anything disparaging about their dogs vs. mine. All breeds have their strengths and weaknesses.

My Setter today is 6 years old. I've hunted him more on pheasant than anything else, but we also see and kill a lot of woodcock each year. I've also hunted him on grouse and woodcock in Maine and we also hunt pheasant and woodcock in NY. I've also hunted him once on quail.

Pheasants run so they can be a nightmare on a pointing bird dog. My dad's dogs and my dog seemed to adapt to their habits well. I have no complaints. (If you go to my profile and photo album, I have some pics in there of my Sam on point. All of those points except one are of him pointing pheasants that decided to stop running and hid, either at a field edge, in a thick woods, or against an obstruction like a rock wall.

Grouse Ridge in NY I am familiar with and I've had dogs from and of course DeCoverly Setters in PA if you like the style of a Ryman Setter. There's ton of info on the internet.
