My 150 has trouble penetrating bone and my brothers 175 is not much better. I have had to sink more than one bolt into deer before. I am thinking of changing to aluminum bolts though because when i hit bone the bolt always breaks half way and the deer has arrows sticking out of them... I think you just need the right bolt/head combo for your weapon of choice.

If you don't plan on hunting until next year with that crossbow then you will have plenty of time to practice with it. I would not anticipate hitting a deer in the shoulder before you even go hunting. Put it out of your mind. Just practice and youll be allright. Just wait for your shot (broadside and standing still) and within 20 yards. If by chance you do hit one in the shoulder chances are you will never find it so practice alot and get good before you go out.

They use higher draw weights, to make up for the short bolts (or arrows) I don't think they have any more kinetic energy then a compound. Although I could be wrong. Basically they shoot the same as a bow. Advantage is less movement.
