Alright I am lucky enough to hunt a big private property. The property is mainly farm land with small woods. I have grown up hunting hedgrows and fields. There is a big woods on the back side of the property that never gets hunted. occasional late season drives.

So my questions are. What do i look for when setting a stand? Should i be looking for bedding areas? I am going to put the trail camera out tom. and look around. Like i said i have never hunted a big woods so any help appreciated.

I'd set up directly off a heavily used trail to and from the field. This time of year also, I'd look for rub and scrape lines and set directly off of them. I normally like to stay away from a bedding area. Once you disturb a big buck in his bed, he's history.

Hunting big woods for archery is tough. The deer dont always use the same trail every day like in south jersey. For the next two weeks they will be seeking out and hanging with the does. So hunt near the does and he will show up eventualy.

always leave a sanctuary. i have two on my main place, together they are about 100ac. i never go in, unless following blood.

hang a camera. get a few observation stands, high and good view. it may look like a big block. the deer will use a area for a reason, not just wondering about. look for slight ridges, vegatation changes, prevailing winds, last bit of cover before hitting a field.
when you start seeing deer it will always be there for a reason. they do seem to wonder when feeding in a big oak flat, but they got there on a specific trail, that they like on that wind.
give it time you will start seeing patterns.

i have places that it's right there in your face. others took me years to see, i wasn't looking how i should of been.
