This is the month that most of us wait for isn't it?

Mine started slow ... nothing tonight.

On the other hand I saw shootable bucks on Wed., Thurs, and Fri. to end October. None closer than 50 yards of course.

Everything I saw was pretty early tonight. One small branched buck in the distance very early...Then a spike chasing a doe and fawn about fifty yards off. A little later a tall forkhorn abouth thirty yards....Then nothing the last hour plus.

I should just copy and paste a previous report. Went hunting in Pa 5c public land and saw small racked bucks. Wind was not really an issue today. Got in the tree around 3:30, hit the bleat call at 4:15 and within minutes had the same big bodied small racked buck I keep seeing come in and passed 30 or so yards broadside. Waited half an hour and hit it again, same buck came running down the hill again looking. He hung around for a few minutes and slipped off. The around 5:50 a smaller deer came walking towards me, looked like a doe, but no. Spiker! He stopped under 10yds standing broadside for a few minutes. He continued to mill around for another ten minutes until a big white farm cat surprised him. Also saw a fox right after getting set up. Another awesome day in the stand nonetheless!

Went out this morning in 5d for a quick hunt before work. Only saw the same 4 pointer that I saw last week checking his scapes. Tried the grunt tube and bleat can, but no takers. Had a doe entering the woods I was in as I was walking out...go figure.

I'll post one for my dad since he has dial-up. :D

He hunted Saturday upstate and saw one doe and a decent 8 pointer. The 8 pointer came within 15 yards but my dad spooked it when he tried to pick up the bow.:(

Deer movement was slower than the last two weekends but should pick up from now until mid-November.

Hunted Thurs afternoon Fri & Sat upstate. I was a day late it seemed. On Tuesday the 28th & Wednesday the 29th the bucks were prowling like nuts, guess that cold, wind rain & snow really got them going. On Wednesday my cous harvested a 238 lb. 135" 8 pt that came into a field full of deer to display his dominance around 5 pm. Thursday afternoon when I got up, it was still pretty cold, I saw 3 doe, a spike and a 6 pt. hunting a funnel. It got considerably warmer for Fri & Sat which seemed to suppress the deer activity. No buck sightings either day, just a few does/fawns. I will be back up Thursday, hope the predicted warm weather won't supress rutting activity, ha, u know it will....but u can't get em if u aren't there.

Matt - they got to move some time. Hunt aggressively. One of those bucks will slip up. ;) I was in a torrential down-pour last Saturday and saw some deer. I was going to call it quits when I saw a nice buck chasing does across a field. I decided to try a rattling sequence before giving up and rattled in an 8 pointer. :)

Went out this am to 5c Pa. Put my buddy in the tree I hunted Sat afternoon, and he saw a doe and another small forkhorn. I hunted around the hill and saw nothing but a fox. DCNR guy said he kicked one up behind me right before we got out of the woods, but we didn't see her.

One small buck walking his trail at 3pm.. Heard him coming w/ a loud, deep grunt. Thought it was going to be a bit bigger.. 4:30 doe comes in, browsing around, after 10 minutes starts bleating almost every step she took.. Not sure if she lookin for one of her young ones or if she wanted to get laid.. I was hoping for the latter.. She walked off bleating and bleating. Saw a back half of big bodied deer about 40 yds in front of me in the thick. Tipped the can a few times, heard a few steps, then heard some real bleats and off they went.... If was fun........

One of those mornings you remember for a long time...A doe being chased at first light, then a doe and button being chased by a 1 1/2 yr old broken antlered buck. Then a group of three, one doe being chased by a very nice eight, just shy of a shooter and a small six following them. The doe and 8 come right under me and I catch movent to my left. A shooter (almost) was closing in, but only had 1 antler. Got his pic on the cell phone only, since I left eh camera home this morning...figures. He was a much better deer than the other 8. Too bad only 1 antler! he was followed a few minutes later by another six and a forkhorn. I will assume the doe was in estrus or close, considering the congo line following!

I orignally had the entire week off but luckly I have the option to go back and take the remainder three days next week. So this is how my two days off unfolded, Monday morning I saw about ten does, fawns and four different bucks. I did see or hear any chasing all four bucks were 2.5 year olds and I felt they needed another year for antler growth. Monday night didn't even see a deer. Tuesday, I saw about 7 or 8 does and alittle more chasing from four different bucks. All small though still fun to watch. I did however witness a decent 7 point snort wheeze back at me. Which I thought was pretty cool. I let him walk as well. Tuesday night, saw the same 7 point but at 3:30 I got a glimpse of a decent body deer so I grunted to him and here he comes, a nice 3.5 or older monster 8 point is walking right at me but unfortunately the property I hunt borders a neighborhood and kids were playing in the back yard, he didn't like it and turned and walked back the way he came. Wednesday back at work with the hopes the moon and cold weather will get the rut going.

bumped a family group going in.
i set between a 10ac briar patch and a swamp. i'm in a hardwoods transition with a 40ac wheat field 60 yards away.
at 4:30 a doe comes running right to my tree. then i hear a grunt. a nice 5pt is 50 yards behind her. he comes to the base of my tree, grunting to her. i pass on him.
then a few deer at last light, milling around.
then after shooting time all hell breaks loose. i think three different bucks hit this group of does all at once. running, grunting, bleating. they are everywere, under me. just can't see horns, only bodies.
they work out to a wheat field and i sneak out.
best night for me in two weeks.

Finally cool air has arrived, and the deer were on there feet. Jumped/pushed deer the whole walk in, the fresh leaves and slight frost made being quit impossible. Still had deer alittle after light. Piebal one pointer, not pushing but staying on her tail, four more does, than a button and then a small six. Steady action and sat til 945am , had three more cross the road on the way out.

Five or six does and fawns this morning with two 1 1/2 yr old bucks...They werent really even pushing them though. saw a medium busted eight on the way out who was alone. Tonight I sat somewhere else and saw two right off being chased by a 1 1/2 yr old and then later I had six total, 5 fawns/buttons and one doe right around me, but nothing pushing.

All in all a 6pt, spiker, button buck and 6 doe. Good afternoon hunt for only 2 1/2 hrs. I just was enjoying my time in the woods too much to take one of those does.

Last night deer still on the move , saw seven in the light, and just at last light saw my first shooter of the year, draw back and can see the pin but not the body. Second buck comes in and dances with first buck, no fighting just displays of dominance.

Was a great day.........

Will be headen out shortly...........SSE, were did this wind dir. come from....

Unlike the previous posts tonight was my best night all year. Saw 4 different bucks including the biggest this year and possibly the biggest ive ever seen in a stand. He chased a doe about 75 yards away and took her back the other way. Saw him 2 more times but they got further and further. Saw 12 total including a little 3 pointer that got about 10 yards. Got to the stand about 245, once again they were already on there feet and I pushed them all the way in. Sunday will be taking the leaf blower!
Got to stand and as I pulled the bow up, had a large spike behind me, 20 min. later smaller spike moved through. About 45min. later came to full draw on a tall six but see more bone to my right, main 8 but only half. He put on a show, scraps/rubs uprooting small trees. I called but no answer. Three doe move through and bring him in tow but he chose the other trail. Great movement even with switching wind and moon.

a half hour later had a 6pt go past at 25 yards. he walked past, went to a winter wheat field, look at the field, then turned and left the same way he came from. walked right back past me and into the bedding area. guess he was looking for a doe in the field, saw nothing then went back to lay down.

Woke up to wind and rain this morning, but the sun peeked through after 1 pm (although the winds never let up). Took my recurve out for the last two hours of daylight today.

Set up on the ground in a downed tree and had a doe come in a half hour before dark with a nice 8 right behind. I've had the buck on my trail camera all fall, but filled my buck tag with a 6 on opening day. No shots on the doe and a downpour ended my hunt, but it was a great day desite the rain & warm temps. new to the board. its been a good november for me. up until the recent warm spell, I've seen a lot of chasing and had good response calling. this saturday morning during a break in the rain, I had a PnY 8pt troll through at 60 yards...never stopped walkin' and never turned his head to the calls. a large 6 followed 15 minutes behind. same response.....none. the previous week I grunted 3 different young bucks within feet of the tree just for the sake of seeing their response. wish the big 8 would read the script.
its a pleasure reading the reports and debates.... great site. thanks for havin' me here.

Hunted the last 3 days of bow in PA, unseasonably warm & rain all 3 days suppressed deer activity significantly. Hunting in it sucked...atleast the beer was cold. Thursday morning saw a 300 lb bear at 7am, 3 does at 8am, a 4 pt. at 8:15 chased the does away then at 9am 20 hen turkeys came thru...friday saw a big fat zero all day and saturday saw a few i couldn't id real far in the am and a doe & 2 fawns in the pm...hopefully rifle season brings better results?

Got out yesterday am. Wind was supposed to be minimal and from a favorable direction for where I was headed. Supposed is a funny word. Froze the better part of the morning and saw nothing, even the squirrels were nested up. Made a move around 10 when the wind really picked up and walked/scouted another area for a couple hours. Came across a bunch of fresh tracks in the mud, one set over 5 inches long. That was about all I saw. Ended the day meeting my dad at the gun range and tried to shoot in heavy cross winds. There's always next time.

Out tuesday pm...they were out in force. Saw about fifteen does fairly early. Only buck was the one antlered big boy I already passed on. Right before dark Five does and fawns come through and linger so I picked one of the mature does, and boy she was sharp, and decided to take her. Property owner there really wants does taken and I've been putting it off, so tonight was this one's night. Nice clean shot and she was down within forty five yards or so.:)

Stopped by another spot with a couple small food plots and saw the clover was pretty much frozen out now, but the brassica is really being thrashed with lots of sign. That may be the spot for this pm.

Nice job!

On the topic of brassica, they only eat it when it gets below freezing? This is our first year planting this stuff and are pleased with the results. Everything else gets eaten within a night, but the brassica seems to be bitter at first?

"String Music"
11-19-2008, 12:27 PM
Supposedly the Brassica's are really good when the ground gets the first real frost...The cold weather turnes them very sugary and thats when the deer really LOVE them!

well snuck into a stand that sat for about a month. i over looks a big dry swamp full of briars. behind the dry swamp it is oaks and hollys, then into a cedar swamp. to my left is 60ac of oaks. behind me is a 40ac wheat field.

Saw about fifteen or so in the area of those plots tonight. Only bucks were a four point and a long spike. rest were does and fawns.

Steve-o, Yes the brassicas last longer than the other stuff especially in areas of high deer density. The first year I planted them, they didnt quite turn out to be the draw I had hoped for. They did gain about 18 inches of growth and then in the late season, the deer really hammered them. I moved that plot about fifty yards, and in this, the second year the deer got on them much earlier. It seems they acquire a taste for them if they are new in an area. Tonight most of the deer ended up in that plot at one point.

And they definitely do change flavor after a hard frost. They maintain the fresh mustard-like flavor, but it gets a sweetness and richness to it that's hard to explain. It grows fantastic if you manage to turn the ground and fertilize it with a high nitrogen mixture atleast once. If you guys are trying growing some of that stuff, check out qdma website under forums for foodplots for whitetails. I couldnt be more impressed with the guys contributing there and the experience and knowledge of the guys posting. lots of farmers, biologists and hunters all contributing. I found it to be an unbelievable resource on the how-to stuff. I just read along for the past year and it helped me this year whe I converted the one plot to a clover stand and re-established another brassica plot. I'll post a few more pics when I get a chance. If you guys planted some and it has gotten some growth, they will eventualy get on it. You guys are quite a bit south of me, so exactly when they will start on it I cant say, especially if it's in the first year of trying. They've been hard onto mine for the past two to three weeks now.

Back to the stand I shot the doe two nights ago. Again, lots of deer, but no antlers. At last light I was able to take another mature doe. THis is a place where numbers needed to be addressed, and the landowner wasnt kidding. This one was a real hog. Thankfully, another quick harvest.

moved a stand on Sunday and sat it last night for the first time, felt really good. About 415 about five to seven doe come out, mill around, gather up and instead of moving through the funnel like normal, they move right back into the swamp. Don't bait in this area, hope I haven't been messed up by masterbaiter on ajointing properties, there getting ready for ML. Will give it an all day sit on Sat. and will be dressing Warm.

Saw 13 in the morning all action was between 744 and 830 , doe , spike , six , 4 doe, 2 more doe, and 2 more doe being chased out of the swamp, but saw nothing following. Six gave me a shot at 42 yard, guess I'll have to practice longer ranger shots for next year.

Same stand in the evening with three going in and ........NOTHING all night.:huh::huh:

Its not easy...seeing bucks at 50-60 yards and not a darn thing to be done with the bow! Gunnin should be good, if it stays cold. We need a week like this past to keep them searching.

One thing Jersey is good for....a long deer season if you are willing to buy the outrageous number of licenses, not to mention the 28$ opportunity to kill a buck...:D

Had limited time to go out yesterday and I am getting desperate. Hunted Pa 5D form 12-3. Conditions were less than favorable and I saw nothing. Wind kicked up pretty good later in the day.

Sat out tonight...Not bad at all. Five different bucks, but all eighteen month olds. Three were in bow range. One poor bastard had one beam broken off just above his brow tine, and the other beam had a broken G2, and a busted brow tine. He must have brought a knife to a gun fight!
Had one mature doe come in with two fawns, but I couldnt get a clean shot off. This is one place I'm trying to take does, but not to be tonight!

Time to get motivated to get ready for the season, it's coming up. Reading through these should help with that. :)
