Picked out our new puppy last night. He comes home on the 25th and should be duck hunting by next season. Named him Thome after the baseball player. Very excited as this is our first dog.

Good luck with your new buddy. If possible, get some duck wings and get him on the scent.Since it's your first,a good book is Gun Dog by Richard Wolters,he gives great insight on starting pups from the first day you bring them home.If nothing else,it's a good read.

Thanks for the responses! I have been reading training books for the last couple of months, I'll have to look into the one you mentioned. Definitley planning on getting some duck wings to get him used to the sent.

Thought I would mention videos that are a good training tool. The ones by Mike Lardy. The one is called Total Retriever Marking, 4 DVD's. takes you through puppy basics up to finished dog. Well worth the money. Uses the e-collar along with it. His 2nd set is Total Retriever Training but i don't think it starts out as much for the puppies.
I have Richard Wolters book, read it years ago, met him in person and have hate mail from him! Believe it or not--he never trained a dog... wrote books but never trained a dog. Yes some of the thing in the book are good to start with but many are really not used in the best way. For one-don't send your dog on a double whistle command! you dog should retriever on his name only... a toot toot toot to come in and a long blast on the whistle to sit. Hope this helps!
