Just like when painting over rust, the surface should be taken down to bare metal before refinishing - not very practical for small scattered spots of rust. Cold blue touchup may or may not help and may or may not match. I stripped and polished the barrel from a Winchester 30-30 around 5 years ago and cold blued it with about ten coats of birchwood casey - it still looks great today, but I really took the prep and application seriously. Practically speaking, for around $85 plus shipping you can get a single barrel profesionally reblued. Thant's what I do when I have a keeper gun that needs a facelift. Ed.

what kind of shotgun is it from? I have a mossberg and if you have one you can send it to them and get it reblued CHEAP! They do an awesome job with a facory finish. Got mine done for my 835 blued and ported for just under 50.00. Another option would be use Blue Wonder. Easy to use and gives a nice finish.......better than cold blue IMO.

If it's just surface rust, try some Hoppy's #9 and 4/0 steel wool. Once cleaned up, apply a coat of paste wax. That worked out well for me on an inexpensive piece three years ago. It still looks good with no reoccurance of rust.
