Today I went out in the woods for a little stress relief and came home with a few squirrels. Already skinned and dressed...anybody have any recipes? Or tips for cooking them...I've never prepared squirrels before.

Thanks!

Quarter them like a deer, hind legs front legs and body section. Cook low and slow in a crock pot with chicken stock and rough cut carrots, onions, potatoes, etc. Take squirrel out after the meat just falls off the bone. Shred meat and discard bones. Put meat back in crock pot and season "stew" to taste with a little salt, pepper, garlic. Thicken with some corn starch and serve over a hot homemade biscut:wave:

Taking my son out tom. to see if he can shoot a couple of them.Taught him how to shoot a 20 gauge today, then went out in our woods and he got his first squirrel. He wants to go tom. instead of fishing(unbelievable). My question is any tricks to skinning them?I've been told they don't skin like a a rabbit.Wife is going to make squirrel pot pie.

cut across the bottom base of the tail.cut across about 1 inch on both sides.put squirrel on ground step on hind legs.use the tail as a handle pull up toward you quick clean and easy less then one minuet

Honestly, I had a blast shooting them but I don't think I'll target squirrels again. I ended up making a chili out of them, it was ok...but no matter how long I scrubbed the meat and picked away at hair there was still a lot of hair leftover in the chili. A LOT of work cleaning and prep for a small amount of meat that IMO wasn't that great.
Now rabbit, I like...I just haven't seen rabbits around SJ at all like I used to! New thread time :)

when i did eat tree rats i used to score the 'meat hair' after skinning and make them in a stew.still not real good.

If you skin um the way I said you will have no hair.
Best way to get the meat off is with a razor blade.Or quarter them slow boil (crock pot)in chicken stock salt.Pull them out and add them to what ever sauce.

At camp I skin them, quarter, crock pot them, for about 2.5 hrs and then grill them with different barbecue sauces

It sure is allot of work for so small return. We eat them as a side bar to appetizers just something to pick at

My son and I love shooting them with our .22's

Rabbits are great but like you they are hard to come by.I have not kicked up a cotton tail in years. We used to always shoot a bunch pheasant hunting back in the day now other than my back yard I don't see any
