One of the main reasons that I became a member of the Buck Barn...last October I adopted a puppy from Leesburg Virginia. Her name is Dixie. She is very smart and has a strong nose. My entire family loves her. I want to start hunting over her this fall but the problem is that she always runs away. I am very frustrated. She has run away several times in the past 6 months. Fortunately she has been returned because our phone number is on her collar. Now, I am at my wits end with "Evil Dixie" and I am purchasing a shock collar with the hope that we can train her to stay.

Does anyone have any experiences that they can share using the shock collar?? I really hope this works because I don't want to give her up.

The shock collar is not used to train the dog its used for re_enforce the commands it nows. You could try some field work like hook a check chord up to dog say here and pull check cord to you. Once dog understands what you want him to do try light stimulation. Say here put on stimulation while pulling checkcord when dog comes in stop stimulation. Now I do this work from like 10 yards not far. Than farther and so on. Once dog nows a command never give a command more than once. Don't just put on shock collar and go to town let the dog were it with it off for like a week a couple hours a day before using it also. Once you have that down I remove check cord and start over from beginning. It's all about repetition. Do that 2 time a day 10 to 15 min a day and you should see some results. This is just my opinion there are many way to do it. I just found this works best for me. My one dog is 14 weeks and I'm running him off check cord cause I did this but didn't use shock collar.

I've used a shock collar with my dog, if you start slow and use it patiently it will eventually work. Before you decide to give the dog away, you owe it to the dog and yourself to try the shock collar. It is an effective tool if used the right way. Just do not go over the top with the first couple uses.

As stated, you need to condition the dog to the collar.Do some research and go slow.

I suggest that you and your dog attend a basic dog obedience class. Forget the collar. Most classes take about 6 weeks. You and the dog go once a week then practice every day what you are taught . The classes will train you to train your dog.

Thanks for the warm welcome and good advice about the shock collar. I got the "SportDog" collar in the mail yesterday and the manual explains what you all advised to do. Use the collar to reinforce the behavior that you teach with the "piggin string". I plan to try it this weekend and will let you know how it is going.

Here is the update:

We are getting her get comfortable wearing the collar. We are taking it slowly. She is still on our property and we haven't taken her out in the field experimenting. We hope to start her training with it tonight. I hope it works!!!!!!!!!

Things are moving slowly but working out well. I am working with Dixie in an open field near my house and she is responding right away to the shock collar. I am very happy. She even is responding when she sees other dogs so I am hopeful!!!!!!!!!!!!!
