Looking to do some calling this week with the rut fast approaching. Anyone have a sequence that seems to work for them? I was thinking of rattling and then quickly following up with a few grunts calls. Should I use the doe bleat as well inbetween rattles?

I always start with 3 grunts. If a deer is close, and you smack the horns together, he'll run. Grunt first, then wait a couple minutes.

I also do one or the other. For me rattling only work roe a short part of the season. I also think it depends if you have knuckle head in the wood calling and rattling non stop. Thats why I no longer use any scents.

Had 2 grey faced bucks come in the other night , looked like they might lock up,about 60 yds. away , hit a light grunt call, the last thing I saw was a vapor trail as they left the county. Afterwards I checked out the area and there was a 6" rubbed up cedar where they were, I guess they thought they came up on the owner of that rub.

Let me start this answer off by saying I've only grunted in one buck, rattled in three and bleated in none.

So.....my experience is to be taken as gospel :D.

I usually start with a couple bleats. They are soft in volume and the least aggressive of the three calls. I feel that, at the very least, it might bring in a curious deer. Then I'll try a few grunts and wait a little while. If nothing responds, I feel it's time to step it up. Then I'll rattle. Light at first, then bring on the noize :D. You can grunt while you rattle. Kid of like two dogs growling as they fight.

From a study I was just reading, loud aggressive calling works the best.

Grunt, bleat, grunt, grunt, grunt, bleat, grunt, bleat. Kinda like that. Only leave a couple seconds inbetween calls. It sounds like a buck in pursuit of a hot doe. I have pulled smaller bucks off of chasing doe with this technique. I haven't really had a big buck come by when I was doing it yet. I use a regular bleat can and a grunt tube. I know from experience it does work. Try it ya never know;)! Oh and don't try it when they are close in. They will just stop and scan the area looking for that doe and buck and if they don't see em they're not coming in. Trial and error my friend! lol

The "snort wheeze" is a good one to throw in the rattling sequence. It's the most challenging sound of all. Any big mature whitetail in the area during the rut will aknowledge:thup:

Tried rattling with the carbon arrows this morning. They dont work. Sounded like rubbing two pieces of cardboard together. You have to have aluminum arrors to get the right tone and vibration.
