Few years back I hunted upstate Pa. saw a nice 6 pointer. We played hide & seek for a couple of day's, he saw me, I saw him. Long story short, follow his routine, finally got the shot. A nice deer, antlers you could touch with one hand from thumb to baby finger. Last night I'm watching The Sportman's Channel watching this guy from Georgia hunting in Texas.
He was in a stand, about 10' off the ground, stand had rifle rest, vision on four sides on fields that went out to about 300yds. Did I mentioned that the stand was heated, yea, heated, plus radio communication with the outfitter. Now here comes a nice 8 pointer, that deer in Pa. would be a trophy in a lot of our books, not this guy, wanted something bigger. After passing a number of big, nice 8 pointers, he got the shot he wanted on that 10 pointer. Resting his rifle on the support, about a 125yd. shot, bang, it's down. Beautiful deer, they said it would be in the 140/150 class.
Now my question is, who was the better hunter. If I hang the deer I got on the wall, nice. When he hangs his on the wall it is spectacular. Nobody really get's into the details on how you got it, they just see the final results. Just curious on how you feel on these type of hunts. It makes deer hunting look simple, like they say, deer hunting, nothing to it.
Takes away from the sport ! !

You are comparing apples to oranges. While certainly you had a tougher hunt. In some parts of the country his hunt was realistic. Some of these "canned" hunts are just that, some are not. Usually you are seeing 10 minutes of footage from a week long hunt. I have had hunts with my bow in Pa that seemed easy. I have also hunted in some premium locations and was tied in fits. Sometimes in all in the eye of the beholder, or shooter for that matter.

Key word " hunter" ......he's not a hunter he is a shooter...he did nothing to scout, hang a stand, pattern, cut lanes in the heat of the summer, carry bait or plant a field or anything else that would be upkeep on the property....he showed up and the guide put him in a stand and he pulled the trigger with the only thing preperation wise is practice and shooting straight....if you have enough money you can hunt anything or anywhere you want....just show up and shoot straight.....no challenge...i'd love to see some of these guys come to jersey with their com'mere deer and sprinkle it on the ground and shoot a monster...aint happening..jersey deer are a tough deer to hunt....thats what makes it so rewarding when you do get one....

I think you know the answer to that question. Your buck is a trophy to you because it is the end result of a great hunt. You worked for it and it paid off. It doesn't matter what the rack looks like, hunting is about the adventure and not the kill. Just my opinion.
I hunted exclusively in Bucks County from the time I was 12 until 23. I killed many, many deer in those early years. My first was a spike and it was a trophy to me, and I'll never forget it. I was 13. That was 20 years ago long before the antler restrictions. Now, I consider hunting in Bucks County a bit like hunting at a petting zoo. So much so, that I gave up hunting alltogether for 7 years. I have some really nice racks and two nice mounts from my early years, but it just wasn't enough of a challenge and a real hunt to keep me interested.
Fast forward 7 years and I was invited to hunt the big woods n Bradford county. The first year up there I didn't see an single buck, and the camp prohibited taking does. Last year I came home with a 5pt. and I couldn't have been more proud of myself. Nonetheless, both years were incredible hunts that I will never forget.
So, the point of all my babbling, a trophy is in the eye of the beholder, and to each his own. If you think that hunting on a game preserve from a heated stand with plumbing and electric is what hunting is all about, than good for you. Personally, I would prefer the odds tipped a bit more toward the deer than me. I consider every rack that I have a trophy, but I am sure others would not. They don't know the story of my hunt, or your hunt, or the guy on the sportsman's channel that shot the 10 pointer.

I've killed several book to near book caliber bucks, along with moose, elk and caribou, but the hunt that was the most satisfying to me was a bitter cold winter archery hunt with 6" snow falling and three hours on stand culminating in a double lung shot on a 12" six point- I was so pumped from that hunt!
Obviously its not all about the size of the rack that makes the hunt, and I know many score-whores  who will never understand that. Many of the hunts on tv give the average Joe such high expectations of what he should consider a "trophy" that he might as well just stick with tv hunting if he's gonna put his standards for a backyard buck up to the same as some celeb hunter in Texas, Alberta, Montana , Kansas, etc...
Make a good clean kill on a representative animal for your area, and thats a good hunt to look back on..don't worry about somebody who can afford to travel all over the world collecting trophies, he's not necessarily a better hunter, just funded better. And the bozos on tv who are doing the high-fence canned hunts and pretending they are free range animals- well, don't get me started....

it's what the deer means to you, not what someone else may think of it on the wall. A trophy is what it means to the hunter who took the animal. That IMO should be the reason it gets mounted...preserving the memory.

I could of said it any better than a couple of our members already did, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Spiker, 6pt, 10pt, dosen't matter. Are you happy with that buck? The antlers are just a bounus part of the hunt. I get in depth into my hunting. I hunt very hard. I've never hunted a penned area only free ranging. It shouldn't matter the stand you where in or the rifle you used or even the place you where hunting. As long as your happy. I wouldn't call anyone a better hunter cause the situations are different or the buck was different. Those expensive cater to comfort. I wouldn't down anyone because they can afford to hunt in comfort. Some hunters like to be exposed to the eliments and rough it. Hunts in Tx are WAYYYYY different from the hunts we know of around here. Not to mention the deer are better there. Tx was the first state to introduce QDM and now they are see the vast benefit of it. Their style of hunting is very different than here. Like another said "your compairing apples to oranges."
BBD how you looking for monday around 3??

Now when I read this post, I was like right on! I have hunted all over this country and as far as Africa. I too have seen these box hunts with deer that live in a high fence. I think a man or woman that finds the sign, plans a stalk and seals the deal, that is a hunter. But it always doesn't have to end with a kill. I sat for 4 hours last night in a stand in a down pour with 15 to 20 mile an hour winds. Nutz!!!! Some would say, but the desire to "HUNT" is overwhelming. A man with the means that needs to have the Texas buck on his wall. So be it. I'm the guy who wants to hear the when, where and how you got it!! You tell me you landed in Houston and 4 hours later you put your tag on this deer, you'll get a nice! Then that's all! The buck i' m most proud of was a six point on State land, 3 miles back, still hunt on his turf, tracking him in a hemlock swamp, shot him at 25 yards. Dressed at 160lbs. He had 4 teeth left in his head. Probably wouldn't make it through the tough winter up north.... Like was said before, a real hunt.

I'll take this thread even further. There is a web site in the makings (don't know the site) that I have already seen advertised. Probably some of you guy's/gal's saw it also. This web site allows you to hunt from your computer. You bring up the web site, watch along shooting lanes. The web cam is set to the rifle, you can move the rifle left/right-up/down and you just wait, when a nice deer comes along place the crosshairs on the deer (it gives distance) then press the mouse. The rifle is hooked into the computer. If the deer goes right down no problem, if not there is someone there to track it. They get back to you with the results, also have a taxidermist available to mount the deer, process the meat, and it's all sent back to you. I feel that there will be people out there that may think this is the way to go. Let's see Eagles on at 1:00P.M., Dallas is the night game, I think I'll get some hunting in between 4:00 & 8:00, (you can pick your own NFL team) is this the hunting of the future.
This makes the can-hunts look hard, just something to think about when the Eagles get beat up again.:fight:
P.S.
Was watching the history channel last night, talked about shooting, black power, percussion/flintlocks, maxi/mini balls, the metallic cartridge, etc., can't wait until they do a show on computer hunting...

It's hard to imagine that this (if not already) will become a reality. I'm confident that no sportsman would ever get involved with something like that. I would guess that it is being marketed to VP's and other executives so they can "experience" a hunt from their boardroom at work. Look for it on the next "Apprentice!" Personally, I am content with Cabelas Big Game Hunter and Deer Hunter at work!! SHH...don't rat me out!

i have killed alot of big dear, and they all look great on my wall, but a friend of mine who used to help me set up stands came over my house a few years back and didnt wait for me to get home so we could go out together, when i got home i said where is harry, my wife said he got here a hour ago and he told me to tell you he is in your stand, so i was pissed at first but then i set off to find another spot, i forgot to mention he took my grunt call and doe piss, so i set up some where else,(where he was suposed to be) i wasnt in my stand a hour when i nice six pointer came within shooting range, crack my muzzy hit perfect, so i went back to my house got my quad loaded the deer on the back, and drove past him in my stand, sporting my deer and makeing hand jesters to him.i like that little six pointer on my wall more than any other deer on my wall, and he is the smallest, this story make me laugh every time i look at that deer, nick:bow:

hate the game not the player!! the fact that you spent more time and effort to shoot a one and a half year old buck does not make you a better hunter it makes you average at best I am not trying to bash you, if he is not breaking the law than he has the right to do it his way, shoot one as big as he did the same way got that six pointer then I would say you are better:D

I've got horns in boxes that have better memories than some on my wall. It's all in the hunt. As for sitting a friends stand....My boys know where all my trees are, safety reasons. They know all they have to do is ask if they want to sit one, and vice versa. I'll often set my buddys up in smokin' hot stands just because they haven't been getting out as much or whatever. When I go over to their house and see a bruser on the wall that they shot out of one of my stands, now that's a trophy for both of us.

Did the Indians look over a field of game like they were in a super market and choose the one that looked the best? Nope. They were hunters. ;)

I'd rather shoot a doe with a bow on my own then rifle shoot a 180" buck from a blind while it eats shelled corn off a dirt road on a Texas ranch. I think those shows are bad for hunting. That is just me and everyone is different. I also wouldn't hunt off a bait pile. Its legal but I don't think it is that sporting.
