Hay bails work fine.....but I started making my own bag targets using old (corn) feed bags and filling them with old denim jeans...with the zippers and studs removed....closed up the bag top with duct tape.....

I've also raided the plastic bag recycle bin at Shop Rite, Acme etc.. and stuffed a large plastic bait bag with hundreds of these plastic shopping bags. Once you get it stuffed pretty tight, the arrows won't pass through and remove easily.

I have heard that old plastic/fiberglass screen material stuffed in a bag works great. Maybe you could get a local shop that does screens to save it for you. You would have to make sure that no old wire screen was mixed in.

I had a friend that worked for a company that made dental floss, he used the mill ends to stuff a bag worked great but was very heavy.

I understand this is an old post . Has anyone ever tried Excelsior?
It is a wood product made from Aspen wood shaved to .021 thick and compressed in bales. Will not work for broad heads. I have them for sale in Phila. They also make a archery stop called Curlex same product larger bales not stocked in Philly.
Contact me I hope I am not in violation I am a Barner.

How is it with crossbows shooting at 350 fps?

Prob better than most vertical bows. Crossbow does not have the kinetic energy a vertical bow does. It's just speed. Never confuse speed for kinetic energy. Kinetic energy kills. Not speed.

Most crossbow arrows are over 400 gr. and shoot their stated speed. That's a lot of kinetic energy. Not that you need that much for a deer.
Feed bags loaded with rags will do the trick.
