Went shed hunting 2 days ago but seen a BIG rack buck still holding his horns in Elmer area. Can anyone explain why they are still holding horns?

I was told that it all depends on how "fit" the buck is. It takes protein to keep them up there. So depending on the food he eats and how much of it has to do with it.
This is what I believe along with the post above.
Any input would be nice.

Yea, you guys are right about the stress level, but in addition, the biggest factor in determining when they drop is the same thing that triggers growth.. testosterone. It's all controlled by the amount of sunlight they receive in the day. Testosterone levels spike in August/September causing velvet to shed and antlers to harden and bottom out in late winter, causing them to drop. Dominant bucks are more likely to shed early because they are more active during the rut, causing more stress. I've even read where an estrous doe, late in the season, will keep a buck's testosterone level up, which in turn, helps him keep his head gear longer. It's an amazing process and all good points so far.. just thought I'd add a little to it

I was fishing a pond in early May last year and had a six pointer with bone white antlers walk past within 30 yards......

Wow that is very interesting. Very surprised they could hold them that long. I usually see 1 buck turkey hunting that's in velvet. I think it's the same one every time. Saw it as a huge 6 and the past 2 years he has been a stud 8 pt with lots of mass
