I've been hunting for two years now (shotgun) and will try out bow hunting next season. I'm more of a gun person and want to get a crossbow. I've heard that Excalibur makes the best and I'm considering their Equinox model. Anybody have any comments or suggestions on which crossbows are the most effective?

Cant go wrong with a tenpoint. Do you want recurve or compound

I was told that recurves are better. Others may have different opinions so I thought I would check on here for any experienced crossbow hunters.

I bought an Excaliber Vortex this year. So far, no problems. Shot a buck the first day I got it.

There's no such thing as the 'best' crossbow. There is, however, one that you'll like the best. I'll give u the same advice given me.....set a price point....line up all the models from the different manufacturers within your budget...and try and shoot as many as possible before you buy. Fit and feel are very personal things. I shoot a Parker Tornado and love it. Would I recommend one...sure...is it necessarily the right one for you...maybe not. Compound vs recurve.....compounds are generally narrower, faster, quieter, but require more maintenance than a recurve. Recurves are nice because you can change the string in the field if needed.

Stick with a brand name.....crossbows are not much different from anything else...you get what you pay for....look at the warranties and whether or not you can get local service...

Lastly...if you want to talk to a real expert...call David at Wyvern Creations (603-659-0575).....he will help you...most knowledgeable crossbow person I know of....

I'd say there is a best of everything. Yes, different firearms may shoot better for others, but as far as quality, craftsmanship, and performance, there's always a leader of the pack. For example, Benelli and Beretta are leaders. Money is not an issue. I just want the crossbow that is proven in the field to not let anyone down. If 90% of crossbow hunters are shooting Excalibur and happy with it, then I would say that would be the one I would lean toward.

My dad got a Barnett from dicks. Piece of JUNK!!! Not accurate at all! He then got a tenpoint it was around 800 bucks but he shot alot of deer this year!! He only missed once cause the scope got banged against the tree.
I DO NOT use a cross bow!
Just throwing that out there but I am younger and don't have a prob drawing my compound.
Good luck

Go to Bobs in glasborro he knows what he is talking about!!

IMHO nobody can answer what is the best xbow for you. It comes down to variances in personal preference. I'd do three things (1) go with the name brands (2) pick up the models you are interested in and if possible take some shots...does it 'feel' good? (3) look up the reviews online about the model you are are leaning towards. Put those together and you'll have a great bow and some successful future hunts with a bow that gives you the confidence of making a good shot.
