That 1/2 rack deer is cool. I'd rather shoot them then some of the younger, more even eight points. Plus, gnarly bucks and big brow tines get me going every time:eek:. Good luck Quinton:thup:

Quinton, I've found out over the years that the same bucks you call junk are learning tools for me. I spend alot of hours in the woods watching "Junk Bucks" if you will, Do their thing without ever knowing I'm in their living room. I've picked up alot of knowledge from them. There Is one thing I can say that is true, "One Man's Junk Is Another Man's Treasures."

And when you shoot that "junk" it will never grow up to be a real treasure....When I say junk I am saying that it is small and nothing that I am interested in killing...I let it go so that next year it might be someting that I want....But "other men" shoot that lil stuff and thats why we dont have bigger bucks running around....I used to shoot that "junk" years ago when I first started...I grew out of that because now I learned by watching that junk and seeing what it could turn out to be if passed up...need meat..shoot a doe....leave the junk to grow up....

...need meat..shoot a doe....leave the junk to grow up....

If more people had that attitude I think they would be shocked at what might walk by in the years to come.
If you need meat, shoot does.

i too like to pass little bucks.
i'd rather take a doe if i need meat.
but i like to take out those "off" racks. if i have a tag to burn, i'd like to get rid of the bad genetics.
i don't want a "off" buck getting a pass for two more years, hoping he will be something. take him out, then the typical racks will have more food.
i love nontypicals, drops and stickers. but sometimes those strange bucks just don't add anything to the herd. they just pass the bad antler traits down.
my 2 cents.

Have to be careful with those "off racks" because they too can turn into a different looking and better buck the following year...Bucks can have "off" antlers due to many different reasons and it may not be because of genetics...Kinda like the "once a spike always a spike" theory....wrong..New Jersey deer rarley make it over the age of 1 1/2 years old....I'f you dont let the deer start to reach there growing potential of a few years you will never know...He may straighten out in a year or two but he never lives that long to find out....I saw horns from a penned buck for the time frame of 7 years...it was amazing to see how he changed from a junk ugly, deformed looking rack to a pretty and huge horned deer...but when he reached 7 he turned into a junky looking rack again...but there was a time in his life that he was amazing and a true trophy in anyones book....I have come to realize that there are few properties that can allow deer to grow up and they are either next to properties that are posted and not allowed to hunt...welcome to NJ.... Also think of another thing about shooting "off" bucks....they probably wont be on your property in the future due to the roaming that they do.They could be miles away breeding those does the following year.....everyone you talk to has a different opinion of what they call "off" antlers and if everyone shoots them then we will never know....let them grow up...I'd rather shoot a 3 1/2 y/o "off" buck that is huge and unique looking than a small pencil horned "off" buck...in recent reading I have found out that the doe genetics are more important in passing alone good a good antlered deer anyway.....Let them all grow up....Just my 2 cents....

Spikes turn into big deer with time......they mostly are just late born deer that have not had as much time to grow as the early ones....give em another year and they will be alot bigger......thank god for the 3pt or better rule in my area....Yo Roc..wonderin how long until you jumped on this site...dad got an 8, jim a huge 8 and I got a real nice 7 and a 6.....was a good trip....
