I caught a raccoon today in a snare, actually the one i made at the coarse with Mr.Ron. The coon are living in this huge oak tree so i set 2 snares at the base and one a little farther off the tree. I got him behind the two frontlegs is there any way i could prevent that from happening again. I caught it in the snare at the base of the tree.

there are those that only want neck caught coon and there are those that want to skin coon LOL a 5 inch loop 5 to 6 inches to the bottom of the loop has the best chance for a neck catch. this is in a tight trail. as the trail gets bigger the loop may have to go bigger. the most important thing is the loop height to the bottom of the loop. the snare must hit the coon right under the chin and the coon has to keep moving forward for the lock to close around the neck. the bigger the loop the higher you should go with in respect to the coons leg height. Most coon if you ever watch them move through brush they pick their way through meaning step over duck under and so forth.
makes not differance in the lock style I catch as many necks in locking as I do non locking.
So with that said I am in the category of I want to skin coon so i go with 5 to 7 loop 5 to 6 off the walking surface and take them how ever they come lol 5 to 6 bottom of the loop you miss the grinner's, skunks and small coon
