Went out duckin' to the stream the last hour or so of daylight earlier. Right away kicked up 10-12 mallards, 4 blackies & missed. They were a little far. Waded way up & then down flushin handfuls of mallards as well as a pair of woodies that I had no shot at. Get back & the last 10 mins of light 2 mallards start circlin the hole. Thought they were two blackies so I only shot one. Now this is where it got weird. I rung her neck & thought she was done. Get back to the truck, put her on the tailgate, & she freaks out & FLIES AWAY.:mad::wave: I could not believe my eyes this duck I thought was out just got up & flew away. Atleast I got a picture of her :D

I can understand it!! We had a big drake mallard last week. Hit him twice in the air. He dropped like a rock. Hit the ice even. We are watching a lot of ducks so I don't get right away. It's dead on the ice right! Head comes up, about 40yds out, bam, head goes down. Head comes back up in a minute or two. Darn thing starts walking away. fouth sho, no affect. Go after him in the boat. One shot, looks dead. Pole back to the blind with it. Had to ring it''s neck in the blind when I saw it looking at me.
Moral is as good as steel has gotten since it first came out, it still has no punch!! It was like they got hit with a barn door with lead as compared to a percentage of the shots with steel. It still is way better than it was and kills ducks. Just not every time, even when you hit them good.

That's funny. I hope she lives. I had a canada like that last year. Dropped it on the first shot then shot it like 4 or 5 times as it swam away. It swam to the opposite side of the channel I was hunting and walked into the grass. I had to walk back my truck and drive over a bridge to get to the other side. I walked toward where I last saw it and it ended up flying away before I could get close enough for another shot.

Had a similer thing last week shot a hen mallard, belly up floating in the tide send the dog and when she gets there it starts freeking out slapping the hanna with her wings then starts diving. She got hold of her brings her back I put bird in the boat. This is what killed me I rung its neck.
Reloaded the gun start watching birds circling and Hanna starts wining I look of and the mallard is standing on the back of the boat.

Amazes me how hearty these birds really are. I doubt she's gonna live, her face was pretty messed up. If a fox don't get to her, infection might. Them migrators sure are wearin' their kevlar

Shot a pheasant acouple of weeks ago, drops like a rock, dog retrieves it,I put it in my game bag.An hour later, get back to the truck, take the bird out of my vest, put it on the tail gate with my buddies bird.Next thing I know the bird jumps off the truck and tries to run away, dog grabs it.Never twitched when it was in my bag.

I've got the story to beat them all. Friend and me in my boat head out in the afternoon on the Cohansey. Get out to the mouth of the bay at 2:30, buddy shoots at a drake mallard and knocks it down. Bird start swimming toward land, then jumps onto land. I motor friend over (no dog) to land to pick up thr bird that is still alive. This bird is beautiful and he wants to mount it but it is still alive. So he doesn't want to give it the jersey twirl so he tries to drown the bird (don't ever try its pointless). So we throw the bird in one of the compartments in the boat so it doesn't get messed up figuring the bird will die by the time we get home. We continue to hunt til legal light, pack up and head home.
Three hours later after shooting this bird I pull up in front of my friend's house to drop him off. We unload his gear out of the truck. We still think this bird is now dead since the mallard had not made a sound after putting him in the box. My friend goes to open the compartment door only to get beaten by ducks wings and bit by the duck. The duck starts quacking and jumps out of the compartment and starts running around inside the boat. I'm standing outside of the boat on one side, friend is on the other side. This mallard jumps up on the bow of my boat, quacks three or four times and flys off into the dark of night.:eek::eek: The expression on my friend's face was priceless!! It was like someone took a piece of candy away from a baby.
