Hi, Guys I am new to this forum. I wanted some opions I hit a Buck tonight and got a total pass through. The deer ran about 10 yards and then started walking very slowy with its tail down and kept walking like that for about 50 yards then just stood there for 10 minutes. Then he started walking very slowly again.I found the arrow and it was right were I shot him and had pink blood and some cartilidge and bright red blood on it. Any Ideas?

My guess is that you hit him low. Probably just missed the "boiler room".

do you think he will die?

He is almost certainly LIVER hit. He will die tonight. Did you push him? If not I would bet he will be within a hundred yard of where you last saw him. It sounds like you hit him a little back. I shot two deer that had reactions just like yours I recovered both the next morning. Was his back slightly arched when standing??

I sure hope so he looked to be probably around a 130 8 pointer

Did you attempt to follow any blood at all? Or did you back out right away?

Might give some more clues.

pink blood is lung blood-has air in it.
the dark blood could be a daiphram hit.
the cartliage could be from the off shoulder or breast bone.
sounds like a quartering shot. quartering away went-diaphram to offside lung into shoulder or brisket.

leave it lay, call out sick and go get him, just bring your bow.

one of my buddies shot one a few years ago like that. we went back the next day. found him still alive, pass through but right down the diaphram. he could breath but not good, you need it to create the vaccuum to fill your lungs.
we didn't bring a bow, but had a knife. took a stab behind the shoulder, deer got up and went 10 yards fell over, knife wound down. stuck the other side, game over.
bring your bow.:D

Well atleast you didn't start with a mistake.

Try it in the morning.

I'd leave the bow at home, if you are going to have to call out, why rush it? I can't think of a better way to spend a few hours than in hand to horn combat with a wounded deer. :)

Take your bow.

yeah I will. I think he was hurt pretty bad because even as my buddy came to get me. That was when he started to walk slowly away and I know he could see my buddy. He didn't run though.

If he is hit where I said he will bed, get up and bed again. Liver hit deer are in serious discomfort. That is why he probably stood there. If he was hit in a nonvital area he would have run into the next county. He sounds like he is hurt pretty bad. Go slow because the blood trail may ger sparse as the live or guts can clog the exit wound. Also keep your nose peeled he will give of a strong odor .

Sounds like a liver shot. I did the same thing to a buck a couple of years ago. Tail down. Dark blood. Slow cadance. Lots of stops and starts. Covered short periods of ground at a time (20-30 yards). light scattered blood trail.

However. When I tracked it the next day it traveled around two hundred yards and was still quite warm.

Take your Bow. Good luck.

I did the same thing earlier this year on a deer. The shot was quartering away and the shot was low and got liver. The deer did the same exact thing. Good luck in the morning!

Reaction sounds like a liver it to me also. I reiterate what the others said - wait til morning and pick up the trail-go slow and bring your bow. Liver hits sometimes take a long time to die but he will be so sick he won't be moving much but likely will be crawled up in a blowdown or somewhere hard to see. We had video of a buck that was shot in Iowa a couple years back that was a confirmed liver hit from the video. Shot was at 5:00pm and we found that buck still alive about 800 yards away at 9:30 the next morning.

I agree with their. Liver hit. Although usually liver hits are dark blood due to the fact that the liver hasen't cleansed the blood yet. Who knows you might want to consider that fact your shot could of been great, but just for some reason the arrow deflected somehow in the deer. FIRST of all when tracking him in the morning move SLOW!! Before to take one step forward scan the area and look hard to see if you see him bedding anywhere. Their might still be a chance he's still alive (ya never know). Mark you trail. I use marker tape. Just take it out when you leave. Usuing the tape you can follow his movements, but with the tape it will be more apparent to you cause you can see the tape and fingure what he might do next. If you get a chance (if he's till alive) put another in him. Move like a snail and take notice to the area or direction that he might be moving towards. You did a good thing by backing out. Hope fully he's a lil past where you last saw him. Best of luck to you.

If you got out quietly, You'll find him. Go slow and mark every tiny drop unless you can easily trail it....

use orange ribbon or toilet tissue - it goes away quick...

total pass thru and didnt push im you will find him..

Pink blood = lung
Bright red blood = artery
Dark Red blood = vein

That's my understanding.

I had this happen to me last year. I should've waited til morning, but I went out about 5 hours later (10pm). When I followed the blood to him I saw his eyes in the flashlight and they were horizontal. The buck then got up and ran about 20 yrds and went down. In the end another arrow had to do the trick w/ a friend holding up the light for me.
If u lose blood look for disturbances on the ground although it's getting tough this time of year b/c of all the fresh leaf fall.. Best of luck, lookin forward to seeing some pics

Like I guessed yesterday, you probably hit him low. I doubt that he will die. They can recover from hits like that.

Yeah I hope I see him again he was a really nice buck. Plus it make me sick to my stomach to wound an animal.

it happens, shoot a few in the yard to double check your elevation.

sometimes your "perfect shot", wasn't.

one buddy hit one quartering away, perfect spot. it ran between the ribs and the hide. it looked good on paper.

was that you keppy? or chris?

we all do it.

You made every effort, you did the right thing. Keep your nose tuned in if he is down in the area you may smell him in a week or so.
