Hunting near roosting areas if you have a good tide can be great the last 20-30 mins of the day. That's about the only time I hunt the afternoon..or if I jump shoot roosting areas.

To many variables.
It's whats making the ducks move, that should dictate when your hunting.

But an afternoon hunt with no ducks is better than no hunt at all!

I hunt the afternoons all the time. I hunt around the tides more than the clock. I definitely prefer the afternoons as it gets colder, it is much more comfortable. I kill as many ducks in the afternoon as I do in the morning. Noon to 4 is my favorite time to hunt, and this Saturday the tide is just perfect for that. I hunt on tidal marshes, and it is different if you're hunting inland, where morning is definitely where it's at. Birds can feed in different areas according to the tide height, and move accordingly on coastal marshes-at least some of the time.

i personally dont like to shoot ducks in the afternoon because they are coming back to roost.

not trying to get anyone mad here but whats the difference if u shoot them coming back to roost or going to feed or just taking a fly by? youre objective was to shoot them anyway correct lmao. again just a thought :) we used to go in evenings because the teal would come blasting by doing 90. it was fun trying to hit one...(not) lol:D

You don't want to hunt the roost. Its comparable to hunting a deer's bedding area. You push them off the roost and they are gone, you push them off the food and they find another source close by.

Hunt a tidal creek on the rising tide where it floods the marsh. They will move up into areas like that with the water.

Team C&C, that's what I mean. Does't matter the time of day. Hunt the tides;). Find the food, AM or PM and the ducks will come:thup:

If you are hunting tidal marsh, you are unlikely to be shooting a roosting spot. That changes from day to day and week to week. Inland waters are different, there are definitely roosting area's and if you shoot it you are done there until you get some new birds. But there are also inland areas where ducks will feed in the afternoons that are not roosting spots. The colder it gets, the more they have to feed. You can also get birds on the way to their roost but not on it.

high or low tide will dictate if its a roost or feeding spot. ;)

I hunt afternoon all the time and I hunt roosts in the afternoon, I just will not shoot past the sun down, or the stop time. ( the majority of ducks will come back in after shooting time so will not be disrupted) If it is a big roost I may stop 15 to 20 min before shooting time, if i want to hunt it in a few days. if you are hunting out in the meadow or river hunt right up to shooting time if you like. The key is never over hunt a spot! hunt it then go to another place the next day. if you are hunting every day in the afternoon this week have 5 or 6 different places to go. if you are hunting in the northern sec you do not have the water fowl areas we have in the south so it is easy to over hunt a spot. or if the hunter is lazy and or can only kill birds in one spot then I say do not hunt that spot in the afternoon alot in a row. also I never care about limits so to me to get a shot at a duck is a great hunt to see them is a good hunt.

Later the season gets the beeter the duckin gets in the afternoon. Most place guys are headin in by ten when they do they kick up birds for you. If you stay out into the afternoon you catch alot of flocks marsh hopin as well as big groups comin off the bay durin mid afternoon. some of our best hunts have beenn from 10-2 if your willin to stay out you will kill birds.

Had a nice afternoon hunt saturday. Not one other guy on the marsh (which can b a bad thing). Tons of blacks droppin in and reponding to the call. A few buffies buzzin the channel, and a few flocks of teal but most were feeding not flying. Killed some birds , calm, great weather, and a little more ice then expected.

I hunt afternoons all the time and have great success. We mostly hunt fields for ducks though (very close to water). When I hunt at the beach (Rehoboth Bay, DE) I rarely hunt the afternoon as we never see much before the end of legal shooting time.

Duck will use the same roost in the tidal marshes. Doesnt mater if it is mud or water what most people look for in a roost is in the main channals and ditches. Ive watched Black duck fly to the same sand bar when there was no water and when there was 3ft of water over it. Sleeping on the water teaches a few things so doent being lost in the meadow.
Sorry if this sounds matter of fact it is not ment to be
