what do you do when you find a scrape where you hunt? what actions do you take?

Figure out where the deer are bedding and feeding or their routes. Once you establish that, set up about 20yrd away from it with the wind in your favor. He will come by to check it out.

Or if you have a trail cam (WITH INFERRED LIGHTS) set that up 15 yrds away. then you will see what time they are hitting the scrape.

Good Luck

Remember that area for next year also...They tend to scrape and use the same licking branch year after year...set a stand on it early before the season for a prevailing wind and when you see scrapes showing up, get in it.....this way you keep the area clean and dont chance pushing him away...

should you put any tinks on it and why a INFERRED LIGHTS trial camara custom?

Most scrapes are tended at night. It is only a indicator that a buck is in the area. Don't set up on a single scrape, try and find the "line". A travel corridor leading from bedding to feeding. It is often a lesser used trail along the more used trails;). They will start to tend the scrapes more frequently as the days get shorter and the nights get colder:cool:

Heres my opinion....Dont put anything on or in it!!!!!!!!!!! leave it alone..he's already coming to it so dont chance messing it up...just hunt it on the right conditions, wind being most important...get on it right after a fresh rain becuase he wil be on it to freshin it up....one thing I learned about scrapes with the trail cameras is even though the scrape itself is not pawed open doesnt mean hes not checking it...I have pictures of a half dozen deer coming to this one licking branch and non of them pawed the ground....Like previously said, find the way they are traveling to and from food and bed and get on that line..... Infrared camers are less of a scare on deer than a flash but they too still spook deer....dont put it right on the scrape..put it as far away as the sensor will allow you....or put it on the run, they will trip it....I have soo many pictures of deer looking right into the camera on picture number 1 becuase they know its there from seeing the flash before...when I put it on 3 picture bust I can see the deer, then him looking at the picture and then him jumping away...doesnt happen on every deer but it happens....

I have finally setup my camera on 2 different scrapes right next to each other. They seem to be getting worked pretty good the last few days, and maybe I can catch him on film! All the scrapes in the area are from a 10 pointer that has survived 2 years of me hunting him now. I have hunted this area for years and never seen these particular set of scrapes by my stand, do you think it might be another buck intruding on his area, or has he moved on with new scrapes? Just curious!

I found that some of the more mature bucks get spooked by the flash. some come back, and some are never seen again.

When you get the pictures back you will be suprised to find out how many different bucks, does and button bucks walk through it...The bigger the scrape doesnt mean the bigger the deer..it means its used alot and by different deer as they dont scrape in the exact spot every time....I have what I call "car hood sized scrapes" and on camera I will have a 6 different bucks pawing at them in 1 night....You might be seeing these new scrapes because of a doe pattern change....bucks will scrape on the heavily traveled doe paths and around food sources pretty heavy.....
