I am looking o get into the black powder world, but do not know which gun I should buy. I was looking at the Remington Genesis line. It is a 209 ignition. I don't even know what that means. Just starting to do my homework on this. Any suggestions?

I have an older Rem mod700 inline With the camo synthetic stock. I got the 209 primer kit to switch it over. Never failed me during crunch time, rain, sleet, snow, and cold. A very reliable gun and easy to break down to clean. It's a little dated but I have no reason to replace it:luv:. Oh, the 209 just means it uses the 209 primers instead of the old caps. Better IMO

Eagle Eye, if you are going to hunt PA, there is only one week for inline muzzleloaders, unless you plan on using it for regular rifleseason. When I wanted to get into black powder shooting a few years ago, I could only afford one gun and I decided on a flintlock because of the extended late season here in PA. Of course an inline is going to be more accurate and easier to shoot, but the flintlock made more sense to me. It allowed me to get in the woods longer throughout the state, and it can be used in the early doe season. The flintlock can seem a little intimidating at first but once you shoot a few rounds through it, it's simple stuff. I really enjoy my flintlock, it might be the funnest gun I own. Do you research and ask questions so you can make a well informed decision.

Sorry, I didn't answer your question about a gun and the price. I got a Thompson Center firestorm with the black synthetic stock and blue barrel 4 years ago at a great price from Dick's. Just looked them up and got some sticker shock. Maybe some of the Traditions shooters will chime in for you, I hear they are also good but have no personal experience. If the budget allows I would consider a stainless barrel, as traditional black powder like Goex is dirty. The newer powders like Pyrodex and Triple 7 are cleaner with less fouling and are easier to remove from the gun. Don't waste your time with sabots, shoot powerbelts. And unless the gun comes with a starter kit, purchase the basic supplies seperately (powder measurers, bullet starters and removers, speedloaders, tools, etc.). Most of the stuff in those kits are chinsey plastic, you'll end up buying better quality stuff within the first season shooting it. I know I'm forgetting tons of stuff, so if you think of something related to flintlocking just ask.

You get get a Genesis pretty cheap at a large Outdoors store in Hamburg after the Remington Rebate. I have one and it shoots very well. It is a decent gun for the money. You can spend a ton on an in-line if you have the money. If money is no option a Thompson Omega would be probably be one of the best. What is your price range? This will help others here with their opinions on what you should look at.

The Rem mdl700 is under 300.00 I think. :)

If you want to hunt the late season and only buy one gun, I'd just go with the flintlock. I was originally going to buy a FL because I wanted a muzzle loader; however, my bro-in-law was looking to sell his inline because he wanted to hunt just traditionally. I purchased his Omega and am very happy with it.

My 2 cents on gun choice - buy a Thompson-Center Encore .50 Cal./209.

The nice part is, you can buy a fully rifled 12-gauge barrel, switch it out with a screwdriver, and hunt deer to your heart's content.

The whole package is a tad pricey, but so are two guns [with 2 triggers to get used to / 2 stocks to fool with, etc.].

BuckHammer43,
That is my dream firearm.:shoot: Just buy the different barrells. I didn't mention that one since it had those options.

I am a big Thompson Center fan and think they make the best inline muzzy's out there. Very easy to maintain and clean and very accurate rifles. I would recommend taking a look at the new Triumph which has been getting great reviews. I have a couple guns already but if I decide to add another - the Triumph would be it.

Guys

So far at 50 yards with the Encore I'm getting one-holers [when the wind isn't blowing]. The BC on the ShokWave 250 is only .187, so the wind drift is greater than my 6mm or '06. But, .8" at 50 and 1.6" at 100 with a 10-mile 90 degree cross wind will still 'git-er-done'. Besides, I can't use the 6mm or '06 in Jersey and the M/L is a whole lot better than my 12-gauge slug gun. [Doesn't kick as much either.]

Besides, if you get a chance at Alaska you can pick up a 375 H&H Mag barrel for the big brown toothey critters for about $300.00. Another gun would cost a bunch more than that.

If the price does not matter go with a Thompson Center. If it does go with CVA or Tradition.I have a T/C Encore and Rem 700ml, but I have shot Tradition's that shot just as good.

If I were starting today, my gun safe would be a lot simpler. [One stainless Encore and a bunch of barrels with scopes.]

Thanks Guys. I think I am going to go with a Davy Crockett style gun. I always wanted to buy the kit and built a Flintlock. Plus Lucky7 is right. In PA we are limited to one week with a inline. I think that I will eventually get an inline but for now, I'll stick with the original model.

Whatever you go with check out the Bargain Cave at Cabelas in Hamburg. I went there with a buddy 2 yrs ago and he got a great deal on a T/C Omega black and blue. He got a scope, rings and all the hardware from the cave too. I don't remember exactly what he spent but I believe total for everything was about as much as the gun itself would have cost. The guy at the counter even installed the rings and scope and laser bore sighted it for him. Great shooting gun, I own the 50 cal. Omega with a laminate stock and stainless barrel.
