Just got back from a Montana bowhunt. Awesome trip, kinda of a DIY hunt on a leased property with 5 miles of creek bottom with alfalfa fields. Basically a 55k acre cattle ranch. After a 31 hour drive we seen the ground had few trees and got a little worried.
The whitetails bedded down in the willows along the creek and moved to the fields in the evening,so we set out to pattern the fields a bit.The mule deer bedded up in the rocks and moved to the fields like clock work. I drew a whitetail buck and mule deer doe permit.
The ground had not been managed or hunted and the buck to doe ratio was sick. In a field you could see 100 does and 10 bucks.
We could shot what we would be happy with so, no pressure and just enjoy the hunt. I seen alot of nice deer and passed some, the other 2 guys seemed to be on bigger deer but I found a heavily used barbwire fence crossing to a hay field and put my eggs in that basket since the spot had the only tree to hang a stand in and I hate ground blinds.
Well on the third evening I passed a nice 8 with a 2in. kicker because I could see another buck about 200yds and thought he would take the same crossing. Well I got lucky and he did. He jumped the fence @ 10 yds and I had to stop him for an 8 yard shot. I smoked him and watched him dump blood for 50 yards and pile up.
the tree in the backround was where I had my stand:D

The shot hit the heart but this is the last time I'll use mech. broadheads. Just not happy with no pass through @ 8 yards.

The mule deer would return up some draws to the cliffs and we would ambush and stalk in the mornings.

I can't see the pictures. Are they photobucket? My works firewall won't let me see pictures from certain sites. :(

Bobby, I'm going to drop a disk at the Bridgeton barracks for Brian,I'll try and send them but it may come in 4 picture bunches. You'll have a good time with those guys, not much to do but eat and hunt....

I felt the same way about muley's but those dark chocolate horns are hard to pass by. I've never seen one that I liked enough to blow my deer tag on, but our group has killed some absolute studs. In the area we hunt it is a deer tag we draw, and it is for either species, so if you shoot your muley you can't kill a whitetail and vice versa. But I really want to kill a big one one year, just has to be the right one.:)

Thanks to all.
I had a combo A landowner permit but next time I'll shot for the B.
Like you said it's either/or for the buck. I think I'll be trying really hard to use that tag on a slammer muley next year.
Target rich environment is right. I seen a million pheasants, so many they were cackling like seagulls. Praire dogs, coons, beavers, coyotes, and even a cat creeping around about 300yards way. I brought my long bow and flung some arrows during the day..We all did well and had a ton of fun.
We left a day early because we awoke to 4" of snow and they were calling for 20". It was 70 degrees Sat. and snowing by Fri.

Hey Wigs,
from what I hear, this is one I shouldn't have missed. Congrats on the kills. By the way, why not show the point of impact on the muley! from what I heard that shot would have made me proud.
COME ON STRIPERS!
