Always the am for me. I'll hunt both, but I've always seen more and bigger buck in the am. At least where I'm at. I always thought about this topic. I thought that if I hunt the morning I'll get around 3-4 hrs of good hunting. In the afternoon you may have 2-3 of good hunting.

I like the afternoon/evening where I hunt (state woods), so may be different elsewhere I'm sure. Always see more in the evening and I have a philosophy on it:p.

The area has a lot of pressure and the deer are on the brink of being nocturnal to begin with. In the morning, after eating on the neighboring farm fields all night, they seem to act like vampires hurrying back to bed before the sun gets up. Their bellies are full and there's nothing really keeping them out and about.

In the evening, they are hungry, but still not ready to expose themselves while the sun is above the tree line. But, their hunger gets them up browsing in the staging areas...thats what I hunt. Its at this time that they are unhurried and milling around where I'm at, never just passing through on a mission like they are in the morning.

One funny thing I've noticed over the years is that the owls start hooting about 45 minutes before last light. I swear its an alarm clock for the deer. I could almost sleep in the stand until I hear the owls, because the deer always move in not long after I hear the first one.

MOST of my success is in the afternoon. But I hunt both.

I would say the afternoon is better in my area, not to say i don't see deer in the am but if i had to choose I would hunt the pm.

In the area that I hunt I have two stands i hunt out of. One is a better am spot and the other is a better pm. I think it has to do with being back in the woods in one stand and the other is closer to a field.

It is PM for me 90% of the time. The other 10% is the last week of October and the first of November, those few weeks it seems to even out.

my main farm is a pm place. in the 11 years i've had it i have seen deer less then 20 times, i only hunt the mornings on saturdays mostly. and i've come in 700 different ways on every wind. it's just a very touchy place in the morning.
i do better in the pm, but i hunt 5 afternoon hunts a week for the full 4 1/2 month season.

I find it easier to sneak into the woods for an afternoon hunt as you can see where you are going. My stand that I am hunting over looks northwest corner of a bedding area. Last year, I caught a nice 7 pointer coming from the fields heading to his bed late....this year, I had a button buck and fawn doe bed down 5 yards from my stand. I haven't been back to the stand since opening day but I stand by my theory of hunt the beds, hang the heads! If I sneak in there EARLY, I think it is much better morning spot than an afternoon spot...

I've killed more deer in the PM but I also hunt the PM more. Sat morning only and weekday afternoons always.

My first buck that was a nice seven was killed in the afternoon and my biggest buck was last year at 11 am. I hunt every morning before work and all day on weekends. Can't kill 'em if your not in the woods. Prefer teh mornings cause one spot is a mile hike up hill. Tough keeping from sweating even on 20 degreee mornings. It's also easier to track in the daylight then at night with a flashlight.

I hunt both but if its cool I like the pm. 3pm in November seems to be magic for me. I guess I don't sit long in the morming so that could be it:confused:

i have killed a few deer in the AM but usually see more deer in the PM, i don't even hunt in the AM anymore as i feel like its a waste of time where i am at and i just leave more scent in the woods
