Would like to try and get some snow geese. I don't have a duck boat. I do have a 25' CC in a slip. My thought is that I'll just park it on a sod bank and wait in the marshes. Do I need decoys, or is it just as easy to calculate where they'll fly? I have Canada geese decoys, will these work in attracting snow geese (not trying to sound dumb, but I figure a goose is a goose).
Appreciate any help/suggestions/tips!

dont hunt snows much on water but from everything ive seen it is NOT easy to calcualte where they fly and you need a ton of dekes to consistantly kill them

Been hunting snows for about three years and a goose is not a goose in this case. I have tried alot of things and spoke with many hunters on the east coast and in the midwest. All advise the same methods. We mostly hunt on land using about 300 decoys. still lite, we need to get up to 700 at least to pull them off their path. You'll need that many if your running traffic. the key to snows is to scout and locate the exact field they feed on. find the "X" field, get permission and set up. If your on the X field you won't need many decoys, 50 to 100. If your trying to pull them in you'll need hundreds. No exaggeration.
Good Luck !!! :D

Thanks!! Sounds like this goose hunting thing is a heck of a lot more work than I thought...
I've been going out striper fishing and seeing the snow geese all over the place, which is why I assumed it would be a fairly easy venture.

We goose hunt a lot during the season. Our main fields are Horsham, Doylestown, Bedminster, and Hilltown areas. We see a ton of canadians. We rarly see snowies. We might see one flock a year about a mile high in the sky. Now if you drive north on the TP (476) and get off at Leigh and take 78 west you will see tons of snowies. I don't know what it is about that area, but we see tons of snowies all around there in fields, but yet we almost never see them 1/2 an hour south. I know of a few kids that drive around that area looking for them. They find them and then go a knocking. They said they've never been turned down. Just running and gunning the area the whole morning. I know if your going to hunt snowies in a field you better have a ton of dekes.

Unless you have 10 grand to invest and a whole bunch of time, don't bother.

That's true Darrin..............unless you've ever hunted with Snowgoose Bob. (PMF......) ( I know several guys here have done so including myself)

He kills snows almost everytime out, decoys or not......he is like the pied piper of Snowgeese.

I have watched him with my own eyes get snow geese to circle the ramp parking lot, while trucks are running ,lights on, etc, and guys loading up boats.

He's tried to teach me.......and I think I'm an Ok caller, but just don't get the same results...........It's unccanny that's for sure since most guys say calling to a flock of snows is usless............Must be something in the Millville water....LOL.........

As always, thanks for the responses guys!

I'm certainly not investing 10K...I'm gonna spend nothing and get creative and if I'm unsuccessful I'll still have a fun time trying! Any time spent in God's creation is time well spent

With that attitude you can certainly enjoy yourself.

I've heard of PMF's pied piper routine... I've also spent hours and hours scouting and laying in freezing cold fields for the joy of it LOL!

Those were all good hunts with good company and good friends but the average guy wants to pull the trigger a lot more than I do, so snow goose hunting is usually a big dissapointment.

My only issue with it is that typically, it comes after everything else is through and honestly, after 6+ months of prep work and hard hunting, I'm ready for a long winter's nap :D

For those who have teh drive and desire :bow:good on ya...

Yea I agree, if some snows happen to come in while I'm ducking Ok, but don't target them myself.........

Socks are the best way to go, not too much of an investment and they work great. Set them up on the meadow and hide right in them.
