Well, this isn't bowhunting, but I wanted it to get some views by folks that may not visit the small game forum :o. I'm a proud dad.
I got permission to hunt a nice piece of property for squirrels today. The goal was to get my 6 year old son his first head of game. Gray squirrel!!! Well, we suceeded. I didn't know whether we'd pull it off because he was having a hard time sitting still and quiet. However, he really buttoned down and focused towards the end and we had one show itself at about 30 yards. Danny made a brilliant shot with the same 410 I got for my 8th birthday . Here are some pictures of the hunt.

That is totally awsome. I cant wait til my son is old enough. Squarrils are a great way to introduce new people to the woods. He will remember that forever. Wish I had keep an old 410 side by side I once had.

Thanks guys. It was quite a moment for both father and son. When he caught his first fish at 2, I was really proud. This took even more effort.
Some might say, "it's just a squirrel. However, it's tough to sit still long enough to get a squirrel in 410 range when you're hunting with a 6 year old :D.

We skinned and quartered it. We'll shoot a few more this year and then make scallopini.

It wouldn't take much to save the hide and tail.
Split the tail down lengthwise and scrape "gently" any fat or flesh left. you should then salt heavily with curing salt or rock salt. that should give you a decent trophy for at least a few years. You can also buy tanning solutions on line or from a fiendly taxidermist. salting will keep it for a few years though.
great job on extending our traditions

The look on his face in that last picture is classic.
Great job Scott.

Brings back many memories when I first took my son fishing and hunting with our deer club. He has grown now and he has killed some big slammers on our property. He also catches some nice strip bass and flounder and makes his own fishing rigs. I'm getting up in years now and he helps the oldman setting up my deerstands and scouts the property to find the deer activey. Without his help I wouldn't be hunting as much as I do. He now teaches me how to become a better hunter and fisherman. He also has a 3 year old daughter who loves to fish and she wants to go hunting with her father and her pop-pop. I can't wait to see her with her first buck. Knowing her father she'll be up the tree when she turns 10 hunting for that big buck. So remember take the little time to take your kids hunting and fishing and they will never forget those times that you spent....:shoot:

You and your son will always remember these times. My father just passed and sooooo many of the thoughts that run through my head are of my pops and I fishing and hunting..

Danny already has a photo album full of fishing pictures. :D From flounder, sea robin, sea bass, smooth dog and skate up north to snapper, grunt, blue runner, trigger fish and the like down south. He even helped me catch my 30lb permit. He cleared the lines and took down the bimini so I could fight the fish around the boat. :D
