6 Yr Old Son's First Squirrel (pics)

I got permission to hunt a nice piece of property for squirrels today. The goal was to get my 6 year old son his first head of game. Gray squirrel!!! Well, we suceeded. I didn't know whether we'd pull it off because he was having a hard time sitting still and quiet. However, he really buttoned down and focused towards the end and we had one show itself at about 30 yards. Danny made a brilliant shot with the same 410 I got for my 8th birthday :thup:. I skinned it last night. Going to eat and possibly get the skin tanned.

I talked to my taxidermist and he said a squirrel would be north of $250. Not worth it. We'll get him a deer next year. ;)

Sounds Great! Im Not up to date on Kids being able to hunt so young! I thought they still had to be 12! Whats the Scoop?:huh:

It's called the mentored youth program. Kids under 12 can hunt squirrel, turkey or deer under these parameters:

1 - must be with adult. Arm's length
2 - only one weapon. Kid and adult cannot both have a weapon.
3 - Adult must carry the weapson while moving.

Basically, Danny and I walk out into the woods. I carry the one gun we have until we get to our spot. When we're sitting and waiting for game, I give him the gun. When we get up to leave or go somewhere else, I carry the gun.
