I am new to hunting in Jersey (michigan for all these years) and I hear that there are towns that you cant hunt in. Some of these towns have areas that are perfect for hunting but I dont want to be getting in any trouble. How do I know if I can hunt a place like my own back yard or not.

You are permitted to hunt in the majority of the towns in NJ so long as you abide but the guidelines set by NJ F&W ...
There are exceptions however and you should check with the town you wish to hunt. Millstone Twp is a no discharge township from what I remember. Another township I used to hunt passed an ordinace that says you have to be 1500 feet ( as oppose to the normal 450 ) from any public place of outdoor recreation ( parks, ball fields, nature trails etc. ). That included private land. So as a private land owner if you wanted hunt within 1500 feet of a public recreation place you had to have written permission from the township. Wall Township tried to pass a similiar ordinance but it was defeated.

see if it is a protected area in the wildlife digest. depending on how many acres it is you can hunt it. have to be 450 feet away from any residential house.
