how many other layers do you have to wear with it in the winter?

Well that all depends on temp, but I know take for instance I remember a last season hunt last year it being around 35-36 degrees I wore my cold gear. I had the cold gear on (top and bottoms) another pair of regular thermal johns, my brush pants, a light fleece jacket, and my regular orange jack (not very thick) and I was ok for about 4 hours. I was also using hand warmers in my pockets too.

Polartec is the best there is, comes in 4 different weights from light to Polar weight and in relaxed or compressed fit. Blows away the overpriced under armour stuff. Order it from Cabelas. I've allways done well with thermax & polypropolene too, which is cheaper yet.

I second the polartec from Cabelas...picked up a union suit from their bargain cave a few years ago and that stuff is what I put on for winter archery when its cold and it keeps me toasty...OK, nothing keeps you toasty on stand in January, but this stuff does the job better than anything I've used.

I also use the Polartec from Cabela's. I got an under armor shirt for Christmas last year and that's nice, too. Polartec is more cozy.

The UnderArmor underwear is great cold-weather gear. While walking and sweating in the cold it works well at wicking moisture away from your body. It weighs next to nothing and is less bulky than some of the earlier nylon options that were out 20 years ago. PolarTec or PolarFleece in different weights as an outerwear are great, lightweight and great for the cold.

Polartec fleece is the way. And I use, if it's really cold, an base layer of polypro. You'll get a kick outta this- I first used the stuff many years ago pheasant hunting- Poly, light wool shirt, and a light camo shell. Well, at midmorning we stopped to water the setter, I took off that camo-- and the inside of that jacket looked like it rained on it !! My skin was dry, shook out the shirts and jacket. It did pull the moisture off. But, I dont get the same when deer hunting, colder and move slower. Still, base layer, fleece, ORANGE shirt, King of the Mountain parka and bibs. That parka is the blowdown pattern- so I take and extra orange to place around the worksite. Good Luck to ALL !

Light polypropelene under fleece and or wool is all I'll wear these days, until it gets really cold then I go to UA Cold Gear...

IF I had it to do over again I would buy merino wool though.

EXPENSIVE but I have some duofold wool combo long johns and based on those these have to be awesome...

under armor is effective, but it makes me itch after wearing all day long.

might have something to do with being hairy....don't really know why.

I have two sets of silks and two sets of poly pros that was issued to me by Military. I've been using the silks here in Iraq for the past few weeks and they work great. So I'll be bringing a set of both home with me when I come home on leave next month. So I can use one or the other when I hit the woods to try my luck at getting a buck.

I'm working outside right now on a cooling tower where we are 70-80 feet off the ground and the wind at just that small an elevation change is considerable! The water from the tower rains on us 8 hours a day 5 days a week and soaks us to the bone, and last week when it dipped to the high 20's low 30's with a 25 kt NW wind I'm sure the wind chill was in the single digits to the low teens and the heat was KILLING me with polypro underwear, a fleece and a wool sweater-nothing heats you up like wool and it keeps you warm even if you are soaked! all three layers dry quickly and wick moisture away. Never wear anything cotton ever-cotton will get wet and absorb your body heat, throwing you into hypothermia very quickly. Another tip is to dress light and pack in a heavier change of clothes so that when you build up a sweat yo uhave a dry backup to get into. Sweat is you worst enemy.

i orderd the polar union suit from cabelas last month. i ordered a tall size. im 6'8" and whenever i order a tall its good if your 5'11". but these actually were long enough for me. i wore them out and they are warm. when i ordered them they were in the bargain cave for $40.00
i really like mine and im gonna order more, also the have a scent lock system built in.

Polartech. Cabelas makes the best stuff in my opinion. All I wear is poly, fleece, wool or silk. Never get hot, cold or soaked with sweat. I just bought the Cabelas Super Slam Elite Fleece bibs and coat. Top notch stuff. Don't worry about cost. Consider it an investment. Spending lots of $ on equipment, licenses, gas etc. only to leave the woods after a few hours doesn't really make sense. You can't kill'em from your couch...at least I can't.
