went out yesturday morning to the same spot that i heard alot of the gobblers on youth day. longgg walk, but got back there by the time they were off the roost. heard two going crazy gobbling every few seconds. but they were already past where i can go, so i walk up a little more in an open area and call. all of a sudden i here a gobble maybe forty yards away behind ssome laurel. the closest cover was a tiny laurel bush infront of me so i went behind it crouched down and called. this birds coming right down the path but i cant see it because im trying to stay low. i see the black body walking through the brush all strutted up. i raise the gun a little bit and wait. i just need it to walk two more inches. then it turns around so now im thinking it saw me raise the gun. so i attempt to sit up up slowly for a walking-away-shot. as i peek my head over the bush, two hens fly away from right next to the tom. he has no idea what happened and flys away too. i never knew he had those hens with him. ohwell, just another learning experience. ill be after em friday (no school)

Even though those birds are a distance away or in an area your not allowed, giv'em a call and be patient. That Tom will make his way, if ya have a hen decoy or two, they will come in. Also rest that gun on bended knee so that the movement to shoot is minimal. Trial and error, but hopefully more successful trials.

Always remember, before you make a call, have a tree or stump picked out that you can set up by if you get a response.

Great experiance bird boy,the close calls and the heart racing, it's what keeps us going after them. Remember also, that's why they call it hunting not killing. Good luck on your next hunt.:fight:

had another close encounter. called one in off the roost at about 150 yards. took about an hour to come in, but finally came into about 30 yards. just on the other side of some brush, couldnt see it. then 2 deer came out from behind me and spooked out the gobbler. i heard him clucking as he got farther and farther away.
