In the last Three yeres or so i've benn getting into hunting coyote and fox and was wondering how many other members have the same interest. As it is a growing branch of many hunters.
All of my hunting is done in pa. In the counties of Bucks, Bradford, and Center. There is no closed season in pa because the coyote population is on the rise. How are the populations and seasons for them in New Jersy?
Do you think we need are own fourm?

For the past 6 weeks the wife and I have been walking the farm roads around my house. About 2 weeks ago we bumped into a hunter sitting along a corn field and I asked him what he was hunting... he replyed Ground Hogs and so fare this year he picked off 173 for the farmer. Yeah the turkey buzzerds are getting up here too.

So wheres all these preator/varmint hunters at? I guess New jersey does'ent have the coyote problem like we are seeing in pa. What are new jerseys regs on fox and coyote?
Those sneaky basturds are starting to affect our deer and turkey populations and their numbers are on the rise. They are one of the smartest animals in the woods and not many people see them, but they are there. If you think grunting a buck in, whithin 10yrds of you stand is a rush. Then try goin out in the middle of the woods at night, with some good cover sent, full camo, a dim red light on your head, a mouth call or a boom box and try to sound like a rabbit getting murdered, and wait till you see a set of glowing yellow eyes runnig at you. AT FULL SPEED:eek:. Now thats a rush. I dont do all my predator hunting in the middle of the night, but that is when they like to do theirs. If there is a fox in the area you more then likey going to see him first, as a coyote is alot more smarter and will take his time getting down wind of you and trying to sniff you out. Why would Pa. have no closed season for this animal if they did'ent think there was a problem?

I live in estell manor nj and we have coyotes. They are getting worse every year. What would be the best approach to kill them since we don't have the open terrain and can only use a shotgun with#4 shot and can only do it between sunrise and sunset and only during deer season and what else am I forgetting:nuts: NJ treats me like a criminal!!! LOL I think there is a permit we can get to spotlight them and shoot but it is still just a shotgun with birdshot. I have a .222 that is a ripper but I can't use it:mad:

onthehunt,
I think you are a little confused on the laws
in NJ, you can get a 2 dollar permit and shoot at night (during permit season)
There is a permit season from Jan 19 - Feb 16th
You can shoot them with a Bow and Arrow, Muzzle loader and shotgun (During different times of the year
Shot size can NOT be smaller than #4 or Larger than T
Electronic calls are LEGAL
Baiting is ILLEGAL
Page 61 of this PDF will show you all the info

First light and last light would be the best time to targrt them. useing #4 or #5 shot you should have no problem puting one down at 40-50yrds. If you can use bait over there that would be your best bet, find some fresh road kill and hang it up off the ground. They are one of the smartest animals in the woods and will sniff you out better then a deer and see better then a turkey. Remember you hunting a hunter. So sent is a big issue, cover sent is a must especily with shot gun and if you can get your hands on skunk gland or fox urine anything that smells dead and does not smell like human is your best bet. Full camo head to toe (face mask). get you self some squiling rabbit tapes and play them in a bom box start off soft not to blow them out of the woods if they are near and graduly get louder. Play for about 30sec then stop and listen. then call alittle louder for a min, and stop and listen. I would sugest getting a little mouse squiker and tapeing it to the for arm of your gun so if you do see one you can give a coulpe sqeeks to get him in a little closer with out haveing to move at all. A destraction decoy is also a good idea they sell little furry balls on a stick that you can set out in front of you that will move around so that his attention is focused on that and not you. You want to always pay attention to wind direction too, always call into the wind, your call will travel alot further and nine times out of ten he will try to circle you and come in from down wind trying to smell what it is hes haveing for dinner. Try not to call the same area to often as they will get call shy and will know something is'ent right. Just because you dont see one dos'ent mean their not there. He might have seen you before you seen him. Good luck let me know how you make out.

Thanks margaritaville, I thought it was nothing larger than #4 but I may have been mistaken. I saw that permit in last years reg book but never read to much into it. Do you hunt coyotes? My buddy does a lot a trapping and he catches quite a few around here, so I never tried to hunt them specifically. We see them while deer hunting but never close enough to stick them with an arrow. That permit season looks inviting though:fight:

i get my wife to do the shopping.:D
but i have done the drive through at the bank with deer on the back. same with the gas station.
i did have a fedex guy tail me on my snare line one time, he just waved. guess he never seen a fox and coon before.:)

it was a female, it was only mid 30lbs. it was a small one. there have been a few around that broke the 50lbs mark.
one of my buddies does the night thing for them. very exciting but very hard. they are the smartest critter in the woods.
in the rule book in the pages about the changes comming, it talks about making the season longer for the night shooting. it has to get voted on first.

The Jersey limited season for coyotes is counter-productive. They are in all counties in Jersey and becoming more of a problem every day [not unlike the bears].
We need to follow PA's lead on the coyote 'problem' - hunt them 24/365 by any means. Between them, the Blue Tongue and the loss of habitat, our deer have enough problems.
I do love hunting groundhogs though. When I first came to Jersey [1984] there were none. Now they are all over the place, but finding them outside a Safety Zone is more of a problem every year. I used to use a 6mm Rem, but the neighbors thought it was too loud. Now I use a Contender carbine in 17 HMR [my Jersey 'hog gun]. [Has anyone noticed the parallel between the HMR and the Hornet?] My best year in PA was 83. Jersey best is 56. I need more hunting time!

Stain, check my post under exotics. Comfirmed report of PGC planting coyotes in Ridley Creek State Park. Wonder where else now. May have to pull my Rem. 722/.222 out of the dealers consignment, even tho it's hard to walk these days.

Imr, Iam not to familer with the ridly area. But i think its only bow hunting only down there, Isent it? I guess not to many people hunting deer in that area. And thats the PGC way of thining the heard. Do you hunt the area?

Snow is great to hunt at night but when the day time temps get up there and then it refreezez at night it makes it imposible to get in the woods with all the crunchin. I love the night hunt its such a rush. A little spooky sometimes too. You dont know what kind of animal eyes your gonna see running at you when you try to sound like a little rabbit or mouse getting killed. Its amazing how bright there eyes get with such a dim red light. with my light i can only see about 10' but i can see a fox or coyote eyes from 200yrds away. do you use a real bright light? and Do you use electronic calls or mouth calls?
mudmarlin70
09-10-2008, 11:19 PM
both kinds of calls. truthfully, I havent had much luck with the light where I go. Its pretty thick. that's probably a matter of technique, I'm sure. With the snow bckground, i,ve been abe to see the bodies coming in without lights.(mostly fox) Love seeing the muzzleflash in the dark.

I never tryied it with no light. You might be crazyer then I em:D LOL. I use both kind of calls also. I mostly use a shot gun at night but in the day time up state pa. i use a 220 swift. I like useing a destaction decoy during the day time also. it greaty improves your chances of not geting busted. where i hunt up in bradford it is good during the daytime you can sneek down a headro and call with 500yrd feilds on both sides and get-em before they can get close enough to wind ya. I cant wait to get out this year.

I have one of the 'Sweet-17' ballistic comp scopes on mine.
I'm a 'walker'. My rig includes: Blaze orange hat, muffs/plugs, .17 HMR Contender over my right shoulder, Pole Cat tripod in my left hand, binos on bono-buddy [8X42 Nikons], Bushnell range finder to the left of the binox, and when it gets windy, a Dwyer wind meter in my ammo bag. The folded tripod is great for glassin'. Spot one. Range it. Make elevation adjustments if I have time. Dope the wind. Set up the tripod, mount the Contender and pop the 'hog. It's not a minimalist rig, but it works well.
Where I hunt there is too much brush to get into almost any other position but behind the tripod, besides, it's fast.

 LOL We archery hunt Coyotes over natural bait,,, Gut piles from the deer from a taged only a few hours before. We hunt mostly in Bradford county PA, and its amazing to see how fast a gut pile dissapeares. Shoot one in the morning and its completly gone by the next morning. This year i am going to hang a camera next to one and see what really happens during the night.

Man what a great site! This the first hunting site I've been on. I mostly go on fishing sites. I was a mate on a charter boat. I post on some sites but mostly lurk. How much can you post about how you hooked up on a schooling bass? But I really like this site and reading the stories. Keep up the great work!!
I'm really glad I good banned forever from the Bass Barn or I would have never found this site!!.

You will be amazed what the coyotes can do on fresh meat in one night.
Last archery season my uncle shot a 7 point just before dark up in bradford. He thought he hit it good, but couldent find it with only about a hour of light left. So instead of pushing the deer further he decided to mark the last sighn of blood and let it lay and come back the following mornig to continue his search. Well the following morning at 7am he went back out and to his supprise the deer was only 50yrds from where he last marked blood. The deer was totaly mawled from the neck down, hind quarters were goin and the body was down to the rib cage. There was no salvageable meat on the deer whats so ever. He decided to take the rack and set out a leg trap next to the carcus. The following day he went to check the trap and the trap was gone and the stake and chain was still in the ground. the split rig that atachs the leg trap to the chain was old and had broken apart. So he never got any of the coyotes that stole his meat. It was deffinty not a bear because bears will usally drag the kill from where they find it. Plus there was coyote crap all over the area. It must have been a pretty hungry family of coyotes. If i can dig up the pics i will post them up.

Just wait till the end of deer season. Thats when most people are doing most of their trapping and predator hunting. I'll trying again this year for them so I'll be posting. We also usually get 2-3 during bear season driving out the swamps too so we'll see.
