View Full Version : Anybody targeting a certain deer???

I've spent the past few years generally targeting a certain deer here or there in different spots, depending on what I've seen where. Just curious how many guys try and do the same vrs. heading out and hunting deer in general. THERE"S NOTHING WRONG WITH EITHER! SO no :fight:.
I'm gonna (hopefully, eventually) be at a disadvantage this year. I cant get out yet to know what's going on in my areas. Priorities.
But I did get a call from the Mrs. on her way home from the hospital tonight she passed one of the two shooters I've seen in a certain spot. This was a gorgeous 8, probably just below P&Y. I want his partner in crime which is (or was) a beautifu 5x5 in the high 130s. Two exceptional deer for sure. I hope he is still around. I've learned that the thrill of chasing 1 can be just as satisfying as taking a deer..

I'm not presonally, but there is a bruiser of a Buck on the property my son & I hunt in Green Lane! I'd really like my son to take him since he hasn't taken a mature Buck yet! I'd love to put something on the wall for him!

i haven't seen him yet.
every year i get a few mature deer on my main farm. i just haven't layed eyes on him yet. i've seen over 20 different bucks there, but only one shooter, but not the jaw dropping deer i know is there.

Yes!! I saw a beautiful 8 pt 2 days ago out with some does, while I was hunting. The buck came in from behind me, and totally skirted my area, showing himself about 60 yds away the next time I saw him. No huge monster, but very respectable deer. I am going to wait for him. I see deer every night on my property and have deer within range, but I am holding out for this guy. He's wall hanger material!:D

quinton...beautiful shed. If I ever get home again I'll post pics of one from two years back.
160" or bust......god bless!
Nitwit..you set the mark, and adjusted as needed!
Sounds like there's an overall mix of guys with different approaches. I personally will target one of a couple I know of, but that's not to say I would pass on a different mature one if it comes by unexpectedly or is a roamer in the rut. By targeting one, I mean that particular deer would be an intended target, not my only one unless it was a monster. I have no problem throwing away a year for the thrill of chasing a truly unique one. I've done it before and had no regrets.

I saw a booner a couple of nights ago spot lighting. I know I probably don't have a chance at him till rut starts. This isen't the first time I've had this happen to me. A couple of years ago before i went to college we saw a huge 150class 10pt with a 10" drop tine. We saw him spotlighting the sunday after openning day of archery. I didn't see him again till I almost hit him with the truck one night. He was chasing 2 doe. Then I saw him in the woods the last weds of archery season. Funny story I woke up late and when I was about 50 yds from the tree i was going to go up and he took off. He was already there. If I would of woke up on time I would of had a crack at him. But yeah when I see monsters i usually target that one buck, unless something better comes around. It's a very very large amount of woods that I hunt and they hide very well. So untill he starts looking for tail I usually don't have a chance.

I am. Last year I had a buck(4point) walk late across the field and I hit a scrub oak tree instead of him. then on Tuesday I saw him again now he is a 6 or 8 point and bigger bodied. I was climbing down and he walked right under my climber. Now I have it in for him and will not shoot anyone but him unless a real bruiser walks by.

Good luck with him! I've always found it satisfying win lose or draw.
Gonna start taking photos of ones I pass on this year if i ever get out. I think it should result in some really good shots of a bunch of tweeners by the end of the year...

Is it him? I'm closing the gap on him....Only reason I think it's him is the little kicker on the G2..Could be wrong...He's what I'm looking for....That scrape camera had alot of activity that night....Had some other does and small bucks also...

quinton, I dont think so. Shed has more main beam than the live one and the kicker is off the opposite side of the g2. Good luck all the same.
I'm dying to get some scrape cams out... If I get out, I'm gonna be completely blind at this point.

in the past two years i just hunted for what i could get. but this year i found a real nice run and put up my single ladder and cuddeback. i saw a 9 point on it and now i have been focusing on that deer this year.

Welcome to the addictive world of trail cameras... since I bought one and put it out I became addicted...I bought a couple more and move them around..It's neat to see the potential of the hunting area you have and to watch what times the deer move...It will make you wait a little bit longer for a certain deer and not just shoot that spike...Lets see the picture of that 9.....I think this site should have a trail cam picture thread so people can just put up their trail came pictures as they get them....

Oh i"ve relied on them for years, especially on mock scrapes. You get photos of the bucks in the area much faster than placing them on feed. I just cant get out at all this year or in the foreseeable future.

This Buck or bust.. Got pics of him last year and he was a shooter then. He gained alot of mass and the sticker on his G2. Unless of course his big brother comes in... I got several pics of him but he never comes in till way after dark. Hopefully during the RUT..

Every buck I've ever shot is one I've never seen before.
I got a shot at a 145" nine pointer that I had seen before but I never expected to see him that day. He spooked before I could shoot. Something behind him. I had the wind in my favor and was waiting for him to take two steps for a perfect 20 yard shot.

The first two pics are last year, the third is this year. They were taken from the same exact tree. I think he was a 3 1/2 year old last year now hes a 4 1/2 yr old. He outwitted me last year, but that will all come to and end when he starts thinking with the wrong head and makes just ONE mistake. This is chess not checkers....

Before I had kids and spent much more time in the woods yes I used to see and target deer. Now I still get out but not the whole day like I used to. But I do get to take my daughter sometimes:)
