we'll it looks like ill be heading to SC this spring to do a hog hunt. I went last year and turned up with nothing. A friend downed a 200lber. Its not a fenced or canned hunt so i gotta work for em. Anyway, im still new at this and am wondering what would be the best gun to bring. Im trying to decide between my 270 and a 12ga rifled slug gun. Seems like the 12ga would have more knockdown power but might lack in penetration. The hogs in this area have very thick skin and get pretty large. Shots will most likely be taken within 30yd at night as they are mostly nocturnal. Inputs?
Thanks

I have several friends that go for hogs every year with 44 mags.If a 44 will take one down a 12 Ga slug will have no problem.I would try a Federal Barnes X bullet. They stay together pretty good on just about anything.

We use lightfield slugs for deer. My son used them on a black bear hunt severl years ago. We went to Fundy outfitters in New Brunswick Canada.
He dropped a 150 pound black bear in its tracks with the 2 3/4" 12 guage lightfield slug. Had two holes at 35 yards. would think the same for pigs. You could bump up to the 3".
On the same trip i used my muzzeloader and dropped a bear. I went to Tioga for their 1600 acre fenced meat hunt for boars.( Was not hunting,) but took a 200 pounder on the run with my Knight MK85. This was with 100 grains of pyrodex and a 300 grain Barnes bullet. Had two holes in him and we did not have to look for him.

Slugs will work just fine. So many folks tell stories about how tuff the shoulder plate is on a hog. It won't stop a centerfire rifle, larger handgun or a 12 gauge slug. Now if you try to shoot through it with a bow, good luck. At thirtyfive yards you will knock the pig right over with a slug gun. I do all my hog hunting with a 44 mag handgun. But we hunt them with dogs, not at night. Good Luck.
