Why did a Republican yesterday vote against a bowhunting bill?

Why will Republicans in the Senate vote for one handgun-a-month and some Democrats vote against it?

Don't look at D's and R's. Look at what the legislator's position is.

It's all about weather the D's or R's have the majority!!! I hope the R's gain the majority in this state!!! If the D's have there way there will be no hunting at all!!

Given some of the confusion of trying to explain a complicated point(s) on an internet forum and given the frustration of some people over such an emotionally charged issue, I'm not exactly certain of the best way keep the answer on track. It will easily be misinterpreted and confusing.

However, everyone has been gracious enough over the past year to allow me to post info on the forum so I do feel that I have an obligation to try to answer why the NJOA is endorsing Sen Adler.

I am going to copy and paste my answer from another forum. However, if you are not you are not satisfied with the answer then instead of posting unpleasant comments simply email me and I will give you a phone number to speak with me personally.

1. For all of you that are concerned about the second amendment - the NJOA is not a second amendment organization. It is not a part of our mission and you won't find it in our mission statement.

The NJOA is a conservation organization and makes determinations based on fishing, hunting, trapping and conservation matters. There are times when second amendment and hunting issues overlap and we addresss those issues in conjunction with NRA representatives. The NJOA does not need to coordinate with the NRA - we do so out of goodwill. Although many of us at the NJOA are personally concerned with the second amendment rights the NJOA has to take into consideration that anglers and trappers may not be.

2. If there are concerns about the senator's stance on the bear hunt - currently the NJOA is not supporting bear hunt legislation - the reason is that there is NO bear hunting legislation being sponsored at this time. In fact, the Governor would veto any bear hunting legislation. So, it is not in our best interest to hold Senator Adler to a commitment to a bear hunt.

However, we are addressing the bear hunt seperately and it does not involve Senator Adler. I do believe that had we made the issue a priority and explained wildlife management to the Senator he might well have changed his mind - as he has on the other bills we are sponsoring.

3. We (NJOA) spent a great deal of time considering the endorsement issue. Mayor Myers appears to be an intelligent man and competent businessman. We recognize that Senator Adler is surely a newcomer to some of our issues. Our endorsement is already opening a great many doors in Trenton that seemed to be permenently closed to outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen of NJ. It is our judgement that the doors will remain open after the election.

The bow hunting bills, fishing bills and constitutional amendment are beginning to move in the senate and assembly, partly because of Senator Adler's support. They are are also moving because the organizations that want these bills passed are working with the support and backing of the NJOA. The backing of 15 council organizations, a lobbyist, the managers, reps and officers. It is a united effort between the "club" you might belong to and the organization of people that make up the NJOA.

Unity is more tha a collection of people - it is a collection of people willing to accepting their differences and work to achieve a common goal. That's the unity we are trying create among sportsmen and sportswomen - and the successes we are having in Trenton are an indication of our progress.

Again, before calling me ugly names contact me first for further explanation. If I can't answer your questions to your satisfaction then "fire away."
