New month and the best is yet to come ...

To keep the chances of arguments, disagreements, etc. to a minimum, lets keep the locations general, especially when dealing with public land. County you hunted in should be good enough?

I also had decent action tonight. Started for me about 610 ... total of 8 does and fawns, all out of range though.

I'm adding that to all of these report threads just so we don't even head down that road.

I do however think I know where you hunt judging from a picture you posted last season :)

Got my first deer with a bow last night around 5:45. Salem county.
All the scent prep I normally do did not get done , had a chance to go immediatly after work so I smelled like WD-40 and they still walked within 10yards and did not scent me.

Went out this evening for the first time of the bow season. It was also the first time on a new piece and friend gave me permission to hunt. At about 6pm I got a little cold and decided to put on my sweatshirt, hung my bow, took off my hat and scent lok headgear, reached into my pack and had the shirt half on when I see movement! What bad timing! So I have the shirt half on half off and 5 does are coming straight at me, 60 yds out. I hurried up and got the shirt on got my bow off the hanger and two of the does hit the corn pile. I picked out the bigger of the two and let 'er rip. THUD! I saw my arrow hit the dirt and flags everywhere. Still not sure what happened I think it was just a bad shot went right under her. Must have been the first draw jitters. Man my heart never stops racing even after 19 yrs of hunting, what a great feeling!

Kid passed the bow test 2 weeks ago sat youth day didnt get a shot. Sat this morning had two does come in. First shot missed and the deer stayed around. Second shot hit the deer. This was his first deer ever. He said his heart was beating a 100 mph. He ended up seeing six more waiting to get down and track this one. He had a smile ear to ear all day. He's hooked on bowhuntin now.

The morning was squirrls, squirrls, and more squirrls, oh and one deer rear end. Bugger just vanished before I could get a good look. The afternoon saw one big boss gobbler, a spiker, and an unexpected visitor. Who walks around with a bow the last half hour of light. He was just walking around Elmer Fudding it. He knows me and I know him and I think he did it on purpose.

New to the site and this is my first post. Went out yesterday afternoon for the first time this season. I jumped 2 deer on the way in at about 2:30. At 4:40ish I saw another deer milling around but comming in my direction. At about 15yds I shot at a spike, It did a big loop and died 25yds from where I shot it. Got the edge off and will have some jerky. Now I can focus on a hammer.

Last night ... saw a button that came through bleating, he was getting a pass on that alone but he was also pulling at my heart strings a bit since he was probably bleating hoping for mom to respond. This is the same spot my brother shot his doe so I'm pretty sure mom is in my freezer :)

Saw another deer move through some thick stuff at 50 yards, couldn't tell what it was. Right at 700 as I was getting ready to pack up I heard a deer snorting up wind of me, must have seen me moving.

That was it.

I passed up a few early last year because they had young looking fawns in tow. So far this year I haven't had to make that decision. I can't do spots and usually am hesistant if the young ones are small and young looking.

The good news is, this little button is one healthy looking dude. Already has a nice big body and his buttons are bordering nubby spikes.

10/4 was a good opener lots of action for me in the Am. Got busted twice by a big ol fat doe while i had deer on the pile ill take a shot at her if she gets in range. No bucks. My brother came to full draw on a smaller doe in the PM but decided not to let her rip. to early in the season i guess all in all its great to be back in the stand:D

Put some cob corn out on Wed last week and skipped out early friday to hunt the spot. 4Pm I walk up on 7 deer with the feed bags on at the spot! They run off and I swear and climb my tree PO'd thinking thats it for the evening. Low and behold 1 hr later here comes the parade, I think it was the group from earlier and then some. Comming from 3 diff directions, I couldn't keep up. They knew something didn't smell right but they didn't care, they were hungry for corn. I lost count at 14 deer all does mostly young and a couple of larger moms with their little ones still in tow. I gave them all a pass.

Sat I set up on new spot and see nothing until I get ready to pack it in, I lower the bow and drop the string, turn around to unhook harness and see some movement from down below. Two bucks, a 4 and a 3 come walking right up the hill in my direction and me with now weapon. They smelled me anyway and stayed 40 + yards away, This is the most deer I've seen since I hunted Princeton back in the 90s.

I need some advice on scent control, What brand of clothes you guys wear and do you use the wash and spray as well?

Tried new spot Saturday after noon in SNJ my uncle got permission to hunt. Looked like a dream, soy bean fields surrounded by good sized fingers of hardwoods. Many historically worn trails from woodlots to the fields, albeit saw very few deer tracks. Set up just inside the field in a 100 yard wide finger coming off a bigger woodlot where oaks were dropping corn good...ideal spot. It wasn't long until the action started, and it went on all afternoon...unfortunately it was the wrong kind of action. I lost count at over 100 turkeys, and i saw a couple more hundred in the distance from my vantage point and could hear them in all the other spots i couldn't see. No deer, but my uncle saw a doe and 2 fawns along with a couple hundred turkeys. Consensus....I bet there used to be a lot of deer there, but not with that many turkeys making those woodlots home now. There are just way too many F'ing turkeys in SNJ anymore, they're as bad as the geese now! Just another tool the state has used to help thin the deer herd, and it's working, unfortunately!!!

Went out Sat with 2 buddies trying to set up a line along a couple funnels. My one buddy set up about 50-60 yds behind me and I was able to turn and look around the side of my tree and see him, my other buddy was outa sight. We were about 20 yards parallel a line of thicket that opens up to a nice thin wooded area with lots of greens and nuts. We were sitting on the open side. About 30mins till dark I heard a twig snap behind me and I turned to see 2 doe come out almost between me and my buddy.....It was awesome they turned and started feeding right under him. I got to see the whole thing play out....maybe a 5 minutes worth which ended in my buddie stickin a doe....it was just awesome, like watching a hunting video......good thing I took pics!

Headed back out this afternoon for some more public land Pa 5C hunting. Hunted the same general area I've been hunting the last few days. Jumped 2 deer heading into my stand, and saw a half decent buck chasing a doe around 4pm. They came crashing down the hill past me, then stopped and milled around for a few moments before walking away. Had them both at about 20 yds. I wanted the doe but didn't want to spoil my spot with that buck on her so tight, thought about taking the buck...I'll probably regret not taking a shot at the buck later, but today he walked. Saw nothing else.

Had a small 6 pointer come within five yards of my stand around 5:30 tonite! (Crotch horn with 2 small browtines)! I passed on him as he was not mature!! He simply wouldn't leave! Came in from my left at 10 yards turned right towards me to 5 yards! Circled behind me and the reminder of the time milling around me at 25 yards! Finally he walked off to my right at 6:40! Nothing else seen!! Still exciting to watch.

I went out saturday with my dad and around 5:30 got a call that he had got his first deer of the year out of the way and then around 6:15 had a couple of does and a 7 pointer got 20 yards. Put a good shot on him and finally got a two year monkey off of my back.

keppy,

Re-post your report without mentioning the zone. Ron and I along with some other members decided early on that even zone #'s were too specific in some instances.

It was a good night so put it back up, I had to delete it because I couldn't edit the title.

Hunted last night in the peice i was seeing the big ten point in. only my second time hunting the peice , set up more than 3ooyds away from the bait ,up where two creeks come together and form a smaller funnel within a text book funnel ,had 3 deer come into a clearing 100yds away i think where does, 610pm look up to the left where i was just looking for the last few minutes and standing 35yds was a deer (now i was with my buddy Tom he was behind the camera i had a mic so he could here my wisper) then i realize it is the big 8 point that started showing his face again he closed the distance to us in no time @ 18yds he loks right up at us as we where some what inline to the knoll he was coming up to the crest of , he just puts his head down to munch an acorn or beech nut as the are has several big white oaks and beach nut trees ,thenlooks to the clearing, I draw and settle in he starts to walk stops and starts to go behind a medium holly tree ,the next thing I see is the luminock disapear and reaper ,he wheels around and bolts up the dry creek bed , with the visual from the luminock i know i had a compleat pass through , I thought i heard a crash but wasnt sure , we do our follow up to the shot and then I sit down to settle it all in . Tom checks the video thinks the shot was a little high and back, i felt good from my angle . Got down checked the arrow and had bright heavy red blood on it . the trail has heavy not even needing a flashlight .He still went 200 yds with a double lung pass through ,the grim reaper made for a easy blood trail , we got the tractor and went to drag him out ,lifted him up for a live wheight of 223lbs dressed out at 172lbs , He has a 16 3/4 spread 21inch mains and a 10 inch and 8 inch g2's ,small brow tines but good g'3 solid mass all the way out . awsome and on video it doesnt get any better , I dont have any pics downloaded yet but will post them later , i do have a few from the moultrie camera

Matt thanks , If i told you where i killed in zone 19 you wouldnt beleive me as the area is known for poaching and driving of deer to the very last day , it is surrounded by public land and it gets hammered ,there is a ten point i havent seen in a while that makes him look like an 80 incher, he was the 2nd biggest and to get him on video was even sweeter,He was around all aug sept then disapeared untill a week ago , I have hunted this area since i was a kid ,it is a little bit better from a pressure stand point but not much ,this to me is like killing a 150 class in an unpressured big buck area .Matt when i get the video from my buddy i will show it , the game camera pics dont do him justice ,I wish i had more footage of him coming in but we didnt see him until he was 25 to 30 yds and closing , the luminock tracer was awsome, and the footage of him running away was awsome as well ,we now have 3 buck kills on video an 8 a 9 and a 10 ,my buddy said it looked like a mulie coming in . I am stoked ,to say the least, I just got a tentative permision if that make sense to a place that is holding some real monsters so i am keeping my fingers crossed .

Report from Monday night, sorry about posting zone #, 19 does in field , biggest at 19 yards and couldn 't shot. See just looked to skinny, the two fawns and yearling look to put a beating on her. After the hunt spoke to another hunter in the area who said he harvested a 190 lbs doe on Oct 4th. I haven't seen a 190 lbs doe in this area for ever.

Not surprised at all Steve, I grew up hunting there too...fertile soil...grows big bucks and these days with not much left to hunt with all the suburban sprawl that's gone on, they get even bigger with less & less pressure on em..as long as they get past the drives that is..and I know how that goes on and have seen the P&Y results..That's a great buck for anywhere Steve, you should be stoked, and proud you did it the hard way...not like alot of those I know that still hunt that area. Congrats again bud..and if you do get permission to hunt where those monsters are, give me a hollar :D

Here is the deer i took last monday night , dressed out at 172lbs 17 inch spread 20 and 21 mains ,10 and 8 inch g2's ,4 inch bases . live wheight of 223lbs. and got it all on video. awsome deer for the area with all the pressure of the public land and neighbors ,plus the poaching at night. Havent killed a buck here for about 5 years a combination of waiting to see a big one and also having soem better spots ,he isnt even the biggest deer i have been seeing .even though some do get killed some do make it .

Hunted a lil piece in back of my buddies house. 410 three little yearlings running around.. they didn't look any bigger than my 15month old daughter. Reminded me of when she ate a bunch of icing off some cake the other night. Saw another single doe and then a momma w/ 2 little ones. No horns, but nice to see movement even in 70 degree temps..

Hopefully my father who just passed away in August guides a nice rack in front of me this season... Miss U pop........... thanks for showing me the way of the woods

Went out yesterday evening. Got in the stand at 4:45. On the way in I noticed a foul odor. I decided to ignore it and be on my way. While sitting in the stand I was 2 doe come right up to the edge of the wood lot I was in, but not come in. This is very unusual behavoir for these deer. Those 2 doe were the only deer I've saw that evening. This is a very good spot and I usually see much more. So I started dwelling on that very foul odor I noticed earlier. I decided it was the smell of something rotting. On my way out from my very unsuccessful hunt I decided to follow my nose. Low and behold I find a rotting button buck. The young buck did show a broadhead mark. Most likly a deer that was just never successfully recovered. I estimate by the choices the scavengers picked off and the amount of decay I would say the buck lay for about 2-3 days. Unfortunitly I will no long hunt this stand for the next 3 weeks untill nature cleans up after a hunter mistake. I understand that this happens to us all, but when the broadhead mark is right in the vitals (and it being only a 6 month yr old deer) I don't see how it could of ran very far.

Marlin,
Sorry to hear about your pop. You know that's why they teach us in the first place. So there will always be a piece of them with us...

Went out yesterday evening, with my 4 year old daughter. Had 6 does come in. The lead one busted me. Probably the Teddy Graham's my daughter was eating.. Any way she stopped 30 yards out, after running. Settled the pin, then the rest of the herd didn't like some thing, so they bolted.. It was still one hell of a hunt.

Wow, I'd say so. That illregular buck is really something their! Most of the time what makes a buck grow illregular is an injury. All bucks carry the genes for illregular racks, it's just if they get an injury for them to be turned on. If a buck recieved an injury to say for example his left rear leg then the right side of his rack will grow illregular and vice versa. If a buck recieves an injury to one of the two front leg areas then its not sure what will happen. An injury to a frontal area could result in both sides of the rack being irregular, just the left side, or just the right side. So if anything that illregular buck you have there recieved an injury to the frontal area of his body. Pritty cool! Thanks for sharing!!

Dad and i hunted friday afternoon from 3:30 to dark, nada for either of us. Hunted saturday morning from 5:30 to 10:30, dad had 4 does come in, was pulled back and ready for the shot, but decided to peak at the bigger deer that was last to make sure it wasn't a buck, he saw it was a doe, so he looked back at the first deer and the shot wasn't there. I saw nothing but lots of squirrels!! Better luck this week!

had a ulta light flying around as soon as i got in my stand tonight.
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h149/ub1243/SUC50288.jpg
then i had a Y buck come out in the bean field, then three does. i then had a very nice 2 1/2 year old 5pt work a scrape 20 yards from me, then back the way he came from, he wanted nothing to do with the field.
the Y buck made a friend with another Y, they got into it pretty good. i could hear the horns from 150 yards away. at last light had a single deer come to the field, couldn't tell what was on top.

then the root of our problems this week came out.

Man it felt good tonight!

Had 3 does come by at about 530. One of which worked a scrape that popped up this week. Had one at about 20 yards quartering to me and another at 35 yards broadside in some thick stuff, but had already decided that unless it was a 100% no brainer I wasn't shooting because I don't need to be tracking a deer all over given what lies ahead in the coming days and weeks.

Had another single deer slip behind me at about 20 or 25 yards a few minutes after the does. Never got a look at anything but legs and a ham. Wish I had.

Another 20 mins goes by and I hear a deer running through the woods, than I hear a grunt. I get ready and out walks a spike. He makes a line for the scrape the doe hit and he works it. Than walks over to the spot the other doe browsed around. He was excited, had the look of a kid in a candy store.

Nice night.

Actually felt cold this afternoon! Saw plenty of deer, but no bucks tonight. I sat a small clover plot and boy are they all over it. Fifteen minutes, and I had deer go by and straight to the plot. About twelve different deer early and a few more late. Played with the camera and got some real closeups.. I wanna try and post em....nothing too exciting, just trying to get the hang of the camera and posting the pics. Nice night

Sat a stand close to the house, field edge. Had three does and two bucks, one pointer and button. They were head to head several times and chasen the doe all over. At 5:30 the field was cleared by a four wheeler, so much for private land. This guy lives just down the road and was bored. As a hunter, which he said he is, why would you just take a cruise at primetime, Knowing there are vehicles in the area. He does not have permission. Better luck next time.

About 15min later see four more move thru with a small buck in tow, he was grunten and pushen. Then it was time for a first.......two fawns and mom bed down about 20yards from me the fawns are right under me. Mom never presented a shot, this is the second time we have dualed and she is real smart, she must be taken out seeing she has this stand pegged and will cost me a buck for sure.

Last night was more or less uneventful...About nine deer in total, no bucks, but a real loudmouth doe snorted nonstop for the last twenty minutes. I caught her attention as as I was taking pics. She is (was) the lead of a group of five.

This morning, I didnt want to spill any blood there right now, but I ended up taking care of that little problem....She was snorting nonstop, and if the two shooters are still in that area, I just didnt see any way I was gonna be able to connect if they are on the fringes of that group. I cut my losses! Time to go recover ol' girl...

didn't hunt today but needed to drill new holes for my screw in steps at one stand. last week i had a step pop out on me at another location. i was only on the fourth step when it let go. so new holes at the old faithfull stands.
the bean field was getting cut tonight so it worked out.

the scrape thats 20 yards from the stand, and on the edge of the field, was still wet in the middle. with the wind blowing like it is, it had to be real recent. this is also at the top of a rise, so it's dry up there. that buck had to be on his scrapes around 3pm, judging be how many passes were done on the beans.
i'm hunting the next four days.
