Just a couple of pics of what's walking around in West Philly. Yes, West Philly. Not worried about spot burning as there is no hunting of any type inside the City limits. These were taken about three days before the snow storm.

LOL MIke Iaconelli has City Limits fishing maybe Mark and Terry Drury should do a season of City Limits hunting :D

Just goes to show how adaptive whitetails are. I'm not surprised at all.

Archery hunting is allowed in Philly as long as rules are followed. Have been stopped there and had to call a warden and he told the cops they were wrong and to go away. Spots a shopping center now though.

They are every where in pockets off the delaware river.I have seen many of deer in small pockets of woods. And believe me are healthy dont know how? The numbers of deer just keep growing each year. The racks i have seen are heavy ? Sooner or later others will catch on hunting these areas.

What are the rules in the city?

I have looked through the Wildlife Digest and PA website. Have found where Philadelphia County (is that the same as the City of Philadelphia?) is Bow only. However, can not find any land designated huntable within the city limits.

Any direction would be appreciated.

Darren,
Any private property within the city limits where you can be 50yds from a dwelling is legal. Same goes for the rest of 5D. Now getting permission is another matter. There are or were some areas around the northeast airport and Pennypack park that are private property. I had a piece near the Budd Co near Red lion rd that has been gone for a few years. It's possible to find those places, but surely not easy. I see treestands in backyards in Conshohocken (next to the expressway) and wonder how people can even hunt those places.

Not being smart but u must do homework by walking these wooded areas and swamp areas u would be surprised. These deer for years have been pressured to these areas for years and now the pop is exploding because of no hunting pressure.

If you have permission to be closer, you dont even have to be 50 yds.

Thanks Guys. Fairmount Park is a no-go also. I had an offer to hunt a property just outside of the city but couldn't bring myself to sit in someone's back yard.

Not being smart but u must do homework...

I get you Kokeman. I've been doing my homework in this area for about a year. Finding the deer is not the problem as the photos will attest.

The problem is land and opportunity. These deep urban environments are very difficult to crack. Go a few miles out of the city and opportunities exist. However, in the city there simply is no open space on which to even seek permission. And, I find that hunters are not held in very high regards inside the concrete jungle. Go figure?

For the time being I think I'm stuck hunting with my camera in Philly. At least the season is always open for photography.

Thanks Guys. Fairmount Park is a no-go also. I had an offer to hunt a property just outside of the city but couldn't bring myself to sit in someone's back yard.It takes some getting used to for sure. The first time I did it in early 2000's it just didn't seem right. I turned to look left after climbing a tree and was looking at a house. Then we started taking deer and, um, well it's pretty dang cool with me now! Many of those people need some culling done so if you hook up in the rights spots it can actually be a lot of fun. In fact I'll be out there backyard hunting this afternoon! :yahooo:

If you drive along the Schuylkill (into the city) look up into the woods on the hill side. You can see tree stands.

I started my archery hunting career in the Glydwynn area. Alot of bruisers around there. You just got to get permission. Knuff said. I now hunt the Valley Forge Area with my archery club. We take alot of big deer but the residents are now only allowing established archery clubs on the properties because we are insured and have been hunting up there since 93. If there are woods, the deer will come!

Good Job Ole 20. I think I'm convinced. Especially since I'm having trouble getting out in the woods this year due to work pressures (thankfully though, I was laid off last year). This would increase my opportunities for sure. I just have to bite the bullet and spend the money on lic., etc. next year.

How were the tenderloins as Christmas appetizers?:D
