Seems like so many guys are only trophy hunters. Everyone wants antler restictions. So answer honestly. Would you still hunt if deer did not have antlers?

We are NOT all trophy hunters!..question for you....if a herd of does and 1 10 pointer came in to you....which one would you shoot?....and wouldnt you get it mounted and be proud?..you would have more chances like this if we refrain from shooting some of the younger ones. Most zones (maybe not all) can and will produce bucks like this if we pass on some of the 1 1/2 yr olds.
If meat is your only concern, i appreciate and respect that you hunt for it. But maybe try and respect some of us who like to see and hunt for a mature buck once in a while too.:)

As long as they tasted good I would hunt them. Besides the trophy guys would look for heaviest deer, longest tail etc....

I hunt Rabbits, We all know which one he'd shoot.:shoot:I think alot of guys that haven't shot a nice buck call themselves meat hunters. jmo I am not a meat hunter, i do eat what i take, but am selective what i shoot. I usually take one doe a year. If i don't take anything all season, no biggie. Had fun and let alot of bucks and does walk that i know i could have taken.

I did not say that you were ALL trophy hunters. I also didnt say that I dont respect guys who are trophy hunters. Yes I would shoot the buck. But what does any of that have to do with my question.

Yep, would still hunt for deer. With that said, I think the restrictions should be placed on the clubs that are out to shoot anything thing that has antlers.

Shooting does is as much fun as a buck. Here in PA it is one buck and done but the fun with the does goes on and on and on.

I'd still take a deer if it had no antlers. I wouldn't be much of a hunter if I chased just bucks. It's still a trophy to me and puts lean vittles in my belly :D

Yes I would still hunt deer if they had no antlers. Heck some of those older does are just as hard to hunt as the bucks

Ok my opionion..if deer didnt have antlers we wouldnt know what they were anyway.the whole hunt is awsome when i see a deer coming my way its instant heartattack..lol..if you ever tried to hunt the lead doe in an area you will see shes just as tough if not tougher than a buck.hell bucks wait till the doe goes first before he even comes out...wonder why?.so of course id hunt id b like whats an antler anyway?my question is would you still fish if they all were the same size, had exact same look, and didnt get anybigger ,and there werent different kinds to catch?bet you would.:)

Hence the problem your having in P.A. now. NOT SEEING DEER. THink about this guys,If we had more trophy hunters we 'd have more trophy deer. If we had more meat hunters what would we have?

One thing that baffles me, I know he was on a guided hunt but I recently watched a crossbow hunt Keith Warren did in PA. Again, I know it was a guided hunt so their land is managed and everything but God, I could not get over some of the bucks that are running around in the state. Absolutely beautiful deer that look like Midwest bucks. I couldn't agree more after seeing that if everyone practiced not only doe management but buck management by taking more mature deer, their genes will stay in the woods and produce some magnificent deer.

Doe hunts mostly here in Bucks County. We have a major problem with over population. It is nothing like the rest of the state except Pittsburgh area (Allehany County). If we had better habitat and more of it we would have even more trophys than what we already have and a larger heard that could be supported by better habitat.

Was it a high fence hunt? Their are a few of them in Pa and the deer that are in them are rediculous.

I hunt mid and upstate NY only. Growing up in this area you were not aloud to take does unless you had a doe tag and they were hard to come by back then. So I grew up hunting just bucks. And as I have aged as a hunter I like to watch the little buck and doe go about there business as if I were not even there. Hunting is a time for me to be with the ol' man and enjoy nature while recharging the batteries.
This year I had my chances to tag out early the first week on 2 forks and 2 small six's. On the 5 day I took a nice 8 at about ten yards. It was a nice buck dressed weight 172 (really long ridge buck with maybe 4 lbs of fat left on him, he would have been lucky to make it through the winter). I hunted the last 2 day of my vacation trying to bump deer to my pops. While doing this I still hunted up on another nice 8 and jumped the big boy (beautiful 10) we were after across the road, he lives to be hunted next year. So I guess the answer to your question is, Maybe. On one hand, I love venison and that "Father Son" time with my pops and on the other I love the thrill of a big buck walking through the woods to me(Nothing like that on earth). But if you want that thrill you have to pass up the little guys. By that I am not getting down on the hunters that take the younger bucks at all. It is every hunter’s right to take a legal deer. It is my choice not to.

Sorry for the long-winded response.

I will leave with this, not matter what the size of the buck or if it is a buck at all enjoy your time in the woods. The harvesting of an animal is just a bonus.

I know that i need 4 deer in my freezer to get me through the year. Some years its 4 does others maybe bucks and does. I love the meat. I dont tell anyone what they should or should not do thats their business they do what they need to do, i'll do what i need to.
This year i was very fortunate to take one doe early bow, one realy nice eight point that weighed 167 the last week in oct i got him mounted, and a realy nice six point that weighed 130 got him with permit bow , i also took a doe the other week permit shotgun 125 yard shot with a 20 ga slug gun. I'm set for now maybe later in the year ill need another one.

I would definately hunt deer-- horns or not!!!! My grandfathers always told me you can't eat the horns. I am selective with the bucks early in the season. But my kid and I love to eat the venison.

I also get my share of meat for the making of the salami and sausage too -- that's a tradition we did for the past 60 years in my family!!

I just love filming, watching, and hunting deer so no doubt I'd be out there with my bow for a doe if deer didn't have antlers.

Who among us doesn't get that chill, that high, that excited feeling when we see a buck and if it's a great buck there's this thing called the fever...man that's when your heart is beating faster than your blood can pump, your eyes get crossed, and your hands shake, and ya can't think straight. Nothin better than that in the woods...

But ya know what, taking an antlerless deer with the bow is exciting EVERY time!

Absolutely. Hunting is my favorite thing to do. Antlers or not I love shooting deer and a fabulous venison dinner. It's sad our state doesn't set some stricter regulations they just want money. I think we all agree 6 bucks per person. Per year is way to high. It should be more like 2. Unlimited does till the ratio somewhat right again. That's what I would like to see

I actually agree with this statement...personally I think the entire state would benefit from a 3pt. rule. I am not by any means a trophy hunter, but it would help the zones that are having issues with population decline. Also, in the unlimited anterless deer zones, put a bag limit on them. If you allow someone to take as much as they want, they will take more than they need. (i'm not talking about everybody, but there's a lot that will)

I shoot alot of does on most years, but am generally selective on the bucks I put my tags on. If I need more meat I shoot more does, I go years without shooting bucks, and its ok. But I would be after deer still if they didn't have antlers.

Hunting nice racked bucks or a turkey with a long beard does add some extra enjoyment to many hunts. But since many of us also hunt for rabbits, squirrels, fox, yotes, pheasant, ducks, geese, etc. hunting in general ain't all about that anyway. And if it is all about the racks for some, to each his own.

I would only hunt for does if someone I knew wanted or needed the meat. I am not fond of venison and always have my deer butchered then give it to some needy person. I voted no.

I think I would, while I shoot em all I do like the anticipation and possibily of that big rack walking in.. That being said..I think it's very easy to get caught up in the persuit of bucks with big racks mainly because of the hunting shows today. It is an addiction and almost ruined hunting for me. It will make you lie and hide spots from even your closest of friends and family. Everyone wants to shoot a buck bigger than the last guy. It wasn't untill I shot and lost a monster 8 and had a couple friends help me look all night and next morning for that deer when i realized why i hunt. not just for the kill but to be with my friends, in the outdoors and the excitement.

Just a long winded yes..

didn't see your answer?

Yes Yes and Yes, how do I like my deer? With taters and gravey!!!! Horns are just to make draggin easier, better known as deer handles. I got walls full of mounts that look really cool but I have to dust them and clean them all the time. I like eating venison better than dusting, but I'd still mount a nice deer if one beat the does to my stand. LOL!!!

I have looked through a good many cook books and I have not found one recipe for antler. The true question in my case isn't whether I would shoot a doe but whether or not I could actually hit a doe or buck when I shot at it.:)
