I have a savage 93 heavy barrel .17 hmr. I have a bushnell 6-18x scope and a sitting bipod. All I can say is this gun is awesome! I put more rounds through this gun in the last 2 years than I have put through all of rifles since I started shooting! The gun is a laser and I have killed groundhogs out to 250 yards with this gun. It smokes a .22 mag in accuracy and killing power.

I really want one. I'm torn between the savage and the marlin. The savage has the better trigger, but the marlin has the better action. Have you seen the savage's with the sawtooth stocks. SOOOOOO SWEET!!!!!!!

How's ammo availability and price? Can't reload the rimfires so factory ammo is the only choice.

I shoot the 17 gr hornady bullets. They cost like $12-15 for a box of 50

You won't be dissappointed. I got the gun from Dunhams near Pittsburgh for $180 with the wood stock. Scope was another $120 and the bipod was like $60. Sight it in at 100 yards...dead on and you will kill them from 5-150 yards. The gun is pretty quiet as well and most of the time you can hear the bullet hit the groundhog before you hear the bang:D

Yup! Im going to get one! Im going to get the full camo model withthe scope already on the gun! Looks like about $450 total!
I shot A crow with My 222 rem Cal, Out of my thompson pistol! it exploded
him at about 100 yards! The 17 hmr is about the sam Velosity as my 222 hand loads! Hell i might even get a barrel in 17 cal for that gun! Its alot cheeper to shoot! And i LOVE TO SHOOT!

It won't explode birds:D I hit doves with it doesn't do that much damage. Velocity off the hornady website is 2550 muzzle and 1901 at 100 yds. The tips of the bullets are some sort of plastic and bullet actually shrapnels when it hits

My dad bought a rifle and scope combo from Cabela's when they first opened in Hamburg. I believe it is a Savage 93 as well. I mounted the scope and sighted it in for him, and I have to say that it's a nice little set-up. At 50 yards, it would group inside of a half-inch paster with monotonous regularity. at 100 yards those tiny and light little bullets suffer the effects of wind but it still would produce 5 shot groups under an inch on occasion. Beyond that I think you'd be better off with a centerfire and a bit heavier bullet. Don't forget that light bullets lose energy much faster than heavier ones, and the trajectory really starts curving down fast. It is a neat little cartridge though, and judging by the preponderance of brass that I see on the ground at the ranges, it's gaining in popularity more and more.

I have a T/C Contender in HMR with a 'Sweet 17' scope. Sight it in for 100 yards, remount the verticle drum to '0', use your range finder and dial it into the scope - hold dead on and squeeze. It's that simple.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the guns discussed above.

Good luck with whatever you buy. You can't go wrong with the HMR.

I have played with a couple different 17HMRs and they are pretty good and reasonably accurate. Currently own 2 so am willing to part with one. Marlin stainless heavy barrel (sorry can't remember the model number at the moment - something like 17BVSS) with Simmons 8 point 4x12 scope on it. I found a CZ that I bought after this one that has the single set trigger which I like allot which is why I would like to part with this one.

Do you think they hit as hard as the .22 Mag? I don't have much experience with the .17 but I would think the .22 Mag would have more energy then the .17?

Flats Cat - According to Hornady's web sight, the ballistics look like this:

__________M-Vel/Energy____100 yds____200 yds
22 Mag_____2,200/322_____1,421/134___1,002/67
Trajectory____-1.5___________0.0_______-16.5

17 HMR_____2,550/245_____1,901/136___1,378/72
Trajectory____-1.5___________0.0________-8.5

The Mag has the edge at the muzzle, but not by enough to make a difference to a 'hog or 'yote. After 100 yards, the Mag drops a whole lot more than the HMR, making the HMR a better long-range option. I love mine.

I shoot a Marlin with a thumb hole stock and a heavy barrel. Real nice rifle. I think the HMR has better energy than the 22 mag. With it's higher velocity, I would say it hits harder. Check the ballistics. 17 over the 22 all day long.

As you can see from the above table, the 22 has 77 foot pounds more energy at the muzzle, but the HMR has more at 100-2 and 200-5 than the 22. Winner = HMR.

Looking to buy one! :shoot::yahooo:

I bought a Marlin llast week, the one with the heavy stainless barrel and the grey laminated stock. Shot about 50 rounds last weekend and it is dead nuts accurate. Can't wait to try it out on a g'hog or a goose. I would highly recommend this rifle.
