If you like to use your lab for hunting or field trials, you ought to be familiar with a disease called EIC or Exercise induced collapse. It is disease that causes labs to collapse when exercised vigorously for 5-20 minutes. There is no cure, but dogs so affected need to avoid very strenous activity. This disease most commonly shows up between 6 months and 3 years. There is a genetic test for the disease. About 1/2 of all labs are thought to be carriers of the gene. Carriers show no symptoms of the disease. Labs used in a breeding program should be tested to avoid throwing pups with this disease.
