We have had very good luck with Black Gold brand. There are several formulas, I use the 24/20 blend in the summer and early fall due to the high fat content for energy, and the lower protien so they don't get as hot from the heat calories. The 30/20 I'll use in the dead of winter for more heat calories. This feed has definately kept the dogs in good condition, without alot of kennel mess. It is affordable at around 25.00 per 50# the 30/20 comes in 40# bags for same price. How about you guys?

I am blessed with a retriever with allergies. He's allergic to chicken, beef, pork, and corn to start. Almost all dog foods start with one or all of those ingredients. Money is not an object when it comes to my buddy but venison and fish based foods that don't have corn in them are getting hard to find. My question is... does anybody cook for their dogs? I figure with all the scraps from butcherin my deer I could cook him meals and vacuum seal them into daily servings. Is this a good idea? Do a month at a time and freeze them so they will last, then just take out the days pack the night before:huh:. At least I know what he's eating;). I've looked on the net a little about it and saw plenty of veggies and vitamin supplements to add but some of these people are the "Runway Moms" of the dog world and it makes me wonder. I would like to hear from my fellow hunters first. What other food groups beside protein does a healthy dog need? What are toxic to dogs(I know the obvious)? Thanx everyone:wave: PS Sorry didn't mean to hijack, Thought I was starting a new thread.

My dog eats Canidae...does not have all the corn glutin fillers. Helped my dog with skin allergies.

I've been feeding my dog Royal Canin for awhile now and he absolutely loves it. Duke's not a hunting dog though he's a pit bull terrier. Yeah, yeah I know blah, blah, blah. I'm a responsible owner and he's been a great dog.
Anyway the food's a bit pricey but he finishes his meal on the spot which helps me ensure that he is getting the ammount of food that he requires at feeding time, stool looks as it should and he has never looked better. Royal Canin also has many varities for all sorts of things.

Purina Pro Plan for years on a lot of dogs and I swear by it.I hate the price but they all stay healthy and live a long time in good shape.I have tried other quality foods and dogs don't do as well.Plus the pens are easy to clean:D.

I feed Hill's Science Diet. I have used most brands of food mentioned here. The science diet seems to produce the best results. What is evident at first is the improved coat. Which is a very good indicator of a nutrious and complete diet for any animal. I use to use pro plan for my pups but found the science diet improved their coats. Which indicates good nutrition. Just my personal observations. Thanks.
