Federal has produced a shell called a Truball slug. It is designed to be fired from a smoothbore shotgun with increased accuracy. There is a section of plastic on the rear of the slug that expands to take up the spce between the barrel walls and the slug making for a better fit and overall more accurate shooting. The come in two speeds regular (1600fps)and reduced recoil (1300 fps).

I shoot Remington's Slugger. Have since I was a kid. It provided the type of accuracy that I was expecting for the time and the price was right. I now own a rifled barrel and really didn't need to experiment anymore, until I made a trade for my boys on a H&R Pardner 12 with rifled sights. I find the Remingtons limited accuracy out to 50 yards, reasonable in the area of the state that I hunt. But this Federal Truball gives me a reason to hit the range for a comparison.

I shoot the rem sluggers also. They fly good for me out to about 50yds. Usually what I do is load up first round as a brenneke Rottweil. Love those slugs. They really hit hard. I have never had a deer get up after getting hit with one of those. Then all other rounds are the rem sluggers (a lot cheaper than the brennekes).

fiocchi makes a slug made specficially for a smoothbore, i used it the last couple of years since activ slugs went out of business.

I've shot slugs from several different 12 gauge smoothbores and have found 3-4 inche groups at 50 honest yards to be no problem through modified or looser chokes. Lets face it - 50 yards is a pretty far shot for most hunters here in NJ.

I like the lightfields out of my 870 with a mod choke.I have had some great groups with them, but they do cost alot more than the sluggers.

Does a 28" vent rib barrel make a difference on the choice of slug?

Wookiefish, make sure you install a rifle sight on the rib. If you are shooting slugs in NJ you must have a sight (open rifle style, scope). The beads on a rib are not acceptable. Just a heads up.
