Checked camera today, and saw this buck that has lost it's horns already! Anyone ever see them loose them this early?

I've seen it before where the buck to doe ration was skewed toward more bucks than does. Once the breeding was done, the older bucks dropped by early December. Zone 38, the great swamp national wildlife refuge backed their hunt up so some of those deer wouldnt get mistaken as does. they do their gun hunt now in Early November instead of early December.
More likely, he was injured though and they will drop if injured.

Looking at the second pic it looks like his antlers were broken, but I may be wrong.

Most likely broken during fight.

Really, broken? I would'nt think they would both break clean at the bases. Huh. Here are some more pics of him. Plus, what is in his ears? they look like some sort of tag. I've been using this camera location for 3 years and I don't think I have ever seen this deer.

I've got pix of a small buck with one side broke off. On the pic above maybe he LOST one heck of a fight! :fight:

He was probably a massive buck that someone shot with a tranquilizer dart to cut the horns off so he will last another year so someone else wont shoot him :)

He's still legal. He would be considered an antlerless deer now.
It's not 100% what I thought. You pulling my leg here? I'm gonna ask around and see if I can find out of any tagging going on in your area. Are you near any parks?

I promise this is legit! I sent the pics to a few friends. I sort of think that either he got out from a pen somewhere or was tagged for some study. I believe those horns where cut off, not broken. Maybe to breed in a pen? I just don't know where he came from. I live about 2 miles out of Schwenksville. Just north west of Spring Mt. My neighbor asked me if I saw a solo doe about 200lbs. I told him the story and he doesn't know of anyone who raises deer in the area either.

Thats what I'm sayin! Look at the tags in the ears in the last pic.

I did a search for deer farms in PA, and there is a listing for one in Schwenksville. It is called Chenago Whitetails. The e-mail and phone number is not active. It would make sense that this deer got out of a pen somewhere.

I thought it looked like tags in his ear too. Maybe form a deer farm out there and got away? There are a few from what I've seen and been told.

Just an FYI their is no deer work going on right now by the PGC. It would be invasive to the hunters. All of the PGC's deer work happens on off hunting seasons never during hunting seasons.
Whenever we do do deer work we do saw off the antlers because it can become a safty issue, but then again this is always done during off hunting seasons. Those tags do look similair to a tag the PGC uses, but backwards. So I don't think it is a PGC tag. Thats is a very good hypothesis of it being an escape pen deer. To my knowledge their are no deer studies being done in SE Pa at this time. Nore have any deer studies been done recently. The closest study area from you is MILES and COUNTIES away and I really doubt he could be from there.

I have calls out to 2 deer farms in the area, both seem to be out of buisness. I'm going to keep looking. Now the next question is do I shoot him if the chance presents itself? It would solve the tag mystery. But what if he is a large breeder that has escaped? If he survives, he could be huge! I will see if he sticks around. I'll follow up if I hear from any farms.

If it was me I'd shoot him asap. Pen/farm raised deer have the chance to be carrying CWD (thats where CWD came from). The tags probably aren't going to say so in so's deer farm address etc. It'll be a code or a serial number to whomever owns the deer knows which deer that is out of the many the most likely own. It's deer season, it legal game. I'd either shoot him or call the PGC and tell them everything you know.

Just got back from the woods and had 3 bucks and a doe at 15yds from me, one had red numbs, no antlers. It and 1 of the others,a six, were sparing. I've never seen this this early in the season before. I guess they could have been knocked off but both sides?
The 3rd I took, a nice 8 with a beautiful basket rack.
From what I've seen tonight the rut is done by me. You have the bucks grouped up again.

I got a return e-mail from a deer farm approx. 3 miles from my house. They had 3 of their breeder bucks get loose in October. Two of them are accounted for, and I e-mailed them the pics of this one, which I would have to assume is the third. Wild story! "Please, please , please, shoot this deer." Thats what they told me. Said they would be afraid of the deer injuiring someone next year when it had antlers. We'll see if I get that chance!
Just found this story. http://www.thereporteronline.com/articles/2009/11/17/news/doc4b02de89177ee170772821.txt

Sud-z,I'm Just wondering why they would think the deer would harm someone.??? how and why would they think that? I Personally would rather wait till next season to see what kind of rack he produces. or if you do shoot it...see if you can get the rack back that belongs to it..lol

I'd call the pgc and tell them what the farm said to you it prob. is a carrier of something may be cw. it may be more dangerous then we know AC is wright kill that aminal as fast as possible to hell with his rack next year he may wipe out your area by next year one deer or an area you chose

Hmmm something sounds fishy. I wonder if they notified the PGC (they probably did, cause they'd be stupied not too), cause they are pleading with you to kill the deer so badly (can you say LAWSUIT if someone got hurt). I can catch him for ya!:D Alive too!:D I say we catch him then sell him on the open market. If he's one of their breeders then he's gotta be worth a couple $$$. All kidding aside call the PGC and tell them the whole story and see what they have to say.

They want you to kill it because if somebody hits it with their car it would be on them, its not a wild deer. Buckshootem 77 was out on his farm when he heard something big coming trough the woods, here it was his neighbors, across the highways bull. When he told him about it he said next time shoot him. He was afraid someone would get killed if they hit it with their car:eek: By looking at the pic of his rack I think I would let him stay around for a little while and sow some of his wild oats.
