Maine no longer has a spring bear hunt.
Back in the late seventies when I hunted in Maine the season went from May - Nov.
I shot my first black there in July 1978.

Maine has a spring hunt, but it has to be on Indian land. The Indians were given special permission to hold these hunts.Call the game commission at 1-207-287-8000 to find out the guides using these areas.

It is not to far above Maine. My son and I went four years ago we both shot bears. I think the best thing was NO FLIES. They are close to the ocean and No flies. Went to quebec some years before that and the flies were so bad, that sitting in the stands with netting on we had to put tissues in our ears to cut down on there noise.
Mac runs a firs class operation. He usually is at the sportsman show in North Jersey.

That was nice.
My next big hunt will be in South Texas. Fall of 2011.(whitetail) My son is taking me for his 30th birthday. We talked about going back, but he wants to try something new. If you talk to Mac, there would be no problem going by yourself. They have 4-5 cabins that they put people up in. Everybody eats together at one long table and , and you sit in a baited treestand, by yourself.
By the way they will tell you bear tastes nasty. Do not believe them. They filets are better than beef and the roast are awsome. The problem is that they will quarter the bear for you and freeze the quarters, which my wife did not like. So take plenty of ice chests with you, if you go in the beginning of the season there will probably be about 12 other hunters there.
You will be surprised on how much bear filets you can brig home.
I used my muzzeloader and my son used his slug gun.
Let me know if you are going, I will try to help you if I can.
