Had a great 08 so far. Started with NJ opening day morning with offshore custom tackle, joe. He took a poke but owes a shirt tail. On the video I took. Joe shaved that deers ass, but no blood. We saw many many deer and one hell of a buck, but with earn a buck we let it walk. All by 10 am, wish I could hunt the afternoon with joe but had to get on the road to New Hamphshire by noon to meet my old coast guard buddies for a week of whitetail and bear. Sunday morning in nh was six guys scouting new ground with moose sign out the butt but few deer. Got our tags and it was reasonable, $76 for a archery tag and $40 for bow bear. Monday to wensday was hard hunting up north in the white mountians, to say the least. it was thick, it was so thick you could not hunt a tree stand and 10 yds was a long way to see in the woods. By wensday morning we had a count of 34 moose, 9 bear on the power lines at long range and not a single whitetail at all. wensday an 11 am I headed back to camp(I never head back) and found 4 of my buddies back, spirtes were down. Got in my truck and headed up to the top of the mountian. Found a old logging road and packed my lone wolf in with me, last afternoon headed back home thursday morning take a shot! right. About 1/2 mile up the road found a field about 80 yds wide by 60 yds wide. set up in a tree overlooking the feild but at the back with bear scat all over the field. And deer sign all over the field. Got set at 2:30pm for the night. at 5:30 heard a racket behind me, for half a hour figured it was another moose, then at about 12 yards I saw horn, it was a whitetail! it was a buck! I got ready and it was so thick behind me even at ten yard I could not see it just hear it. Got a look just before he stepped into my shooting lane the only one i had and I drew my 70 lb pse X force. held and held and held he never stepped out. he turned and headed back down hill, had a hole about 9"by 9" that looked clear and I let it fly. The lighted nock told the tale went dead on to about five yards out then hooked high and left hitting him in front of the butt below the spine, no pass thur and watched the lighted nock run down hill. Checked my watch 6:03 pm, dejected I sat waiting for dark. At 6:32 the bear walked into the top of the feild, ranged him at 67 yds and I have a 60yd pin. but just watched him, sick in the gut over the deer. Got down at dark and marked first blood and walked out. Thursday morning suppose to be on the road home 497 miles to go but we all went in to track my buck. (you know your with good friends when not one bailed) Found a lame blood trail that died in fifty yds, and it was a grid search. buddy circled down to the swamp 100 yds below us and a bear ran right to him. Shot the bear in the neck with a buckblaster broadhead and it went 50 yds. Funny thing hearing "guys i just shot a bear, Guys, guys!" No firearms we took our time working to him, Never been scared in the woods before, but walking into a swamp with a wounded bear somewhere in front of you with a knife in your hand is to say the least, new underware. Found the bear dead thank god. 176 female 3 years old no cubs. Being that we were just looking for my deer no real gear and the only one with a compass was "wrong way" no kidding thats his nickname! we drug the bear about 500 yds to a road 100yds away. My deer was not found and I am sick about it, but after dragging the bear I had nothing left to find the deer. Got in the truck and drove eight hours home, still sick about my buck. The truth is that was the hardest whitetail hunting I have ever done. six guys four days not even a flag, That was hunting and my shirttail will hang proud, even if I am not. Hope you enjoyed the story and so you know,(everthing in NH closes at 8 pm, gas stations, burger king, walmart, etc) Learned that this year!
