well first thing is you got the right brand. IMHO the tenpoint is the best.
There are a number of other good crossbows that are being made, but I like the ten point.
Which model did you select? Which cocking aid?
Did your crossbow come fully assembled? If not watch the dvd that comes with it first as there are a lot of hints and recommendations.
When it is assembled try to get a feel for it, it weighs significantly more then a compound so even just holding it takes some getting used to.
Again in the dvd gives proper instructions for cocking, aiming, firing, maintenance, and cleaning so not much else to say.
Your first couple shots just keep fairly short say 10yards, and try to find a stable platform to shoot from.

I purchased a 10 point phantom from Cabelas in February. Awesome x-bow. Sited the bow in at 20 yards off a rest 3 shots later I was hitting a bull’s eye the size of a coffee cup. That was it, the bow was than dead on at 20, 30 and 40 yards. Cabelas at the time was running a free range finder with the complete set purchase. A range finder is recommended as it takes the guess work out. The bow was completely assembled and truly awesome!!! GOOD LUCK:thup:
