Well, I took the caller to a spot where I know there's usually a pack of coyotes. I've had them light up to a locator call on my older cassette player a couple years back.
Redneck, the fx3 has more than enough volume, believe me. I hit em with the group howl locator and on the second sequence of howls, they start. Alot of dogs, probably close to twenty different dogs start in from probably a quarter mile away. After a minute or so, they start to quiet down. I called a buddy who was right in the area and he really wanted to hear them. He doesnt hunt, but was curious. So as I'm driving away, I pass him as he pulls up. I take him back to the spot and of course, they make me a liar, at first.
After a couple of sequences, we get the silent treatment. He wanted to hear the raccoon pup call, so I play it and sure enough we hear a challenge bark less than fifty yards from the cars. Then the rest start challenge howling and female howling behind this one dog that is extremely pissed off. We could clearly hear twigs snappin just behind this dog as he's running back and forth challenge barking at us. Eventually, we started talking and even started our cars to leave. That dog just kept challenge barking at about fifty yards with the rest howling behind him! Very neat. I'm holding the caller outside the window in my hand and I play the challenge howl, and he is going nuts barking at us. I learned so much in just those couple of minutes about the different vocalizations...wow. I've got alot to learn about the different types of howls and barks, but you can definitely identify them as you heard them. This was my first time using something other than a distress type call. Good so far.
