Back in april I purchased an Optima Elite Combo in 50 cal/12 ga. I have not been able to get to the range untill this morning. Well I am very happy to report that this BP firearm is everything that I had hoped for!

I first shot it at the Quinton SC 25 yrd line setting the Cabellas 3x9 BP range finder scope at 9x My first shot was 4"low and 1"right, I made the calculated guess work adjustments and the next 275gr hp core lock hit dead ctr in a 1 1/2 bulls eye !!!:)Talk about Luck ,I followed up with 3 more shots removeing the bull completely and then tried a shot at 100yds with the same result!

I was shooting 100 gr pyrodex and wanted to try a 150 charge on the 200 mtr range but there were several others useing this range so with the temp riseing and humidity i left one happy shooter!:D

The Optama elite has a 29"fluted bbl, thumb hold stock and is 150 gr capable, the cabelas scope is a good value but i would much rather have a Lupold in 3x9 but at the time i was at the bottom of my wallett.

I have some 300 gr psp powerbelt bulletts but did not get to try them today, They have good press but I would appriciate any input from others who have hunted with them.:):):) Mike

The Optima Elite 209 Magnum muzzleloader is CVA’s top-of-the-line break-action gun in the Optima Series. However, the Optima Elite is not just a muzzleloader. The Elite’s innovative design provides an interchangeable rifle barrel system that allows shooters to use either a Bergara muzzleloading barrel or a Bergara center-fire barrel on the same frame. Premium Bergara Barrels™ are standard on all Optima Elites, providing custom barrel performance and accuracy without the custom price.

I have a CVA Optima, not the elite. It shoots great. I load 2 pyrodex pellets (100 gr) and shoot the CVA powerbelt bullets with the aerotip. I don't remember if they are 245 gr or 295 gr. Unless your hunting out west somewhere, there is no need to load 150 gr of powder. In fact, I have a friend who went out to Colorado last year to hunt elk with his T/C. He tried 150 gr powder loads but thought the recoil was to much. He shot a 5x5 elk with his normal 100 gr pyrodex load.

They shure have come a long way from my Charles daily hawken, I cannot wait to take this one out this season! Everything has it's limitations but for the money any quality inline will do the job in NJ.
The best equipment in the world cannot correct a bad shot placement, Im lucky to have nice toys but conserative enough to no my limitations. White tail Deer are amazeing animals, last season i cut the hart in half with a 270gr rem core lock hp from a 50 cal rem 700ml at 40 yds and the big doe still managed to go 150 yds with no blood trail, when i shot the hart in half i shut down the pump and with the exception of a few small drops of blood and hair I inatilly started to think that i made a bad shot, My hunting partner was relentless in assisting in finding her. Most of the blood was retained in the belly cavity and under her right side where tht slug came thru the lung. 150 yds still baffels my mind.:)
With my bad knees ill try and break the front sholder's next time, it was a long drag for me.:D

Well after two months of watching deer during bow season and letting them walk I decided to kill one for the table with the new CVA Optima . Was in my stand by six am monday morning and the same two little yearlings walked in and started munching 6:30 they were at my 25 yrd marker and I had a feeling they had made me by the caution in there movements. at 7am I see a larger deer at 60 yds walking twards the yearlings. With a little luck and some cover noise from a truck out on the road I cocked the hammer and put the cross hairs on the little buck. at 40 yrd Im thinking bird in hand is worth two in the bush and at 7:10 am it's all over!:)

I was shooting 130 gr pyrodex and a 295 gr polmer tip cva power belt and put it on the left shoulder, the deer folded right where it was standing. What supprised me was the damage caused by the power belt load, there was a 1/2" entry on the top of the shoulder and on the inside a area 4" in diameter was disinigrated, the hart was mush and the exit was thru the r lung. I did loose that shoulder area for table fare but at 60 yrs old with bad knees there was no tracking or big drag out.:D

Now I can relax and wait for old bone head, and if it's ment to be ill be looking at another shoulder shot.

Used the 300s for several years with two pellets. Killed several deer with them, also a black bear at Fundy Outfitters in Canada and a wild boar. Have always had two hole in all the game I shot, and either they went right down or did not go to far.
Took last year off from hunting, first time in 40 years, decided to fish instead.
I am back to hunting this year. I bought the same gun and upped to the 338 power belt Platinum with 150 grains. The area I hunt in south jersey I can make 100 yard shots. Want all the energy out there I can get. More powder and more bullet.
Took a 8 pointer yesterday morning with my slug gun 75 yard shot. chasing a doe.

Gotta love it.
