Years ago, I picked up a Remington Sportsman 58 20ga auto shotgun. I got it cheap, but its in really nice condition, other than the guy before me sawed the barrel off and tapped the top of the action for a scope mount in his home attempt at a slug gun.

I originally grabbed the gun because I figured I'd put it away for my son to use when he got old enough and now he's getting close to that point.

The 2 screw holes are no problem, I don't mind plugging them with short screws, but the barrel is a problem. I guess its now the equivelent to an open choke and there is no front bead. No one makes a replacement barrel that I can find.

I've heard that a barrel from an 870 can be modified to fit, apparently just needs the ports for the gases created to operate the auto. If so, That would give me lots of options, considering all the aftermarket 870 barrels out there.

Anyone ever done this or can recommend the right gunsmith? I'd like to find someone who has done it before and has some experience with it, rather than a "yea, I'll give it a shot" type:o. Thanks

I have a 58 in 12 gauge and a 870 slug barrel works

Pattern it before worrying about another barrel. My best upland gun is a 1100 20gauge that I bought with a mod barrel that I promptly cut off.In the last 30 years it has killed hundreds of pheasants and rabbits here to South Dakota. The wads in a lot of the shells today do a good job.Putting a bead on is no big deal, but mine fell off and I never put it back on.Try it before you change it.;)

Get a gunsmith to add a Poly-Choke, that way you have some length back plus varible chokes. Just a thought...
